Are Mk5 Golf GTIs overpriced?

Looking through adverts it seems you can get a Seat Leon or VRS, younger with fewer miles for the same price, is it just about the badge?

I don't think they're over priced at all.

You can buy many of them in Alright condition and spec for under £2k.


If you sit in a Leon and then in a Golf you'll realise why they are a teeny bit more expensive.

Can you? On autotrader I can only find sub 150 mile cars for around £3.5k, whereas a Seat Leon or Audi A3 with the same 2.0 engine seems to be the £2k-2.5k price

I think the nicer cars are in the £3.5k+ category - some of the above examples I've listed look a bit ropey.

I'd be keen on getting into a GTi when decent cars drop to about £2.5k.

Sounds like the guy wants an enthusiast owned 40k example but doesn't want to pay for it!

On a slightly related topic, do very few MK5 Golfs have steering wheel controls? Most of them I see seem to have blanks which is seems strange? Whereas every MK5 Astra has them except for bottom spec

Most do, only some of the earliest models or lowest spec ones don't.

It became standard in 06 or 07 from memory.

I think mk5 Golf GTIs seem overpriced because you can have an Astra H VXR or mk2 Focus ST for no more money, and I think that they’re better. They seem better made and quicker and both are better looking (in my opinion)

I got an Astra H SRi Turbo 200 for half the price

When they were new the Golf was always said to be that bit more accomplished than the Octavia and Leon. It's always been a popular car so minters with low miles will be expensive, but no more so than other popular hot hatches. Check out prices of Clio 182's or EP3 civic type R's and it's the same story. Doesn't mean that you can't get a good one for reasonable money though but obviously the cheaper you go the more you'll compromise on condition, history, mileage etc. Question is, what sort of price/condition balance represents the best value? A lot will also depend on how you'll use the car and how long you plan to keep it.

As an alternative I'd look at the A3 2.0tfsi as it was a more expensive car new but cheaper than the golf now. Perhaps because it's a bit bland and understated? But it'd be just as good and maybe easier to find a decent one.

Astra VXRs and Focus STs may be better on paper, they are definitely not better made. VXRs have valve stem seals and gearboxes made of melted chocolate, not to mention the STs problematic block.
GTIs have issues but nothing like those two, driven all three and it’s easy to see why the golf is held in higher regard than its rivals

Get a Good Golf GTI and you won’t regret it, they definitely are not overpriced imo

Thanks for the sensible answers, I was hoping there was some mechanical reason they held their price, I do prefer them but the reality is if they are 2-3k more than a Leon then the latter may get my money!

A Leon Cupra has the K04 turbo, the same as a GTI ED30 and the S3 so that’s worth bearing in mind if you plan tuning.

Try both, a Leon FR runs the same K03 turbo as a GTI, the interiors of the Leon’s are grim by comparison to the Golf
