King of the road - SUV 25k-35k mark - HELP?!

Evening Gents/Ladies,

I’m thinking to purchase a pre-owned SUV around the £20k-35k mark.

So far I have the following options which would be 2015-2016 models..

Jaguar F Pace
Volvo XC90
BMW X5
Audi Q7
Mercedes GLE
Jeep Grand Cherokee

Not really looking to purchase from the Land Rover brand as the ownership scares me. Although I am liking the “king of the road” appeal from them.

Anyone know of any other cars which feel quite high to drive // ownership experiences of any of the above?

So far I have driven the Mercedes GLE which I felt was high enough and much higher than the X5. But I am feeling the 2016 GLE feels outdated now.

Thoughts much appreciated.

Maserati Levante at the higher part of the budget but you don't see many & they're a very nice place to be.

Recently bought a 2016 X5 40d.

Drove a couple on your list but felt the X5 offered the best balance of performance and space whilst still feeling a bit more like a car combined with the nice driving position.

Compared to my TDV8 Range Rover Sport, it’s maybe not as comfortable but it’s much better in every other way, although I do miss the fridge in the arm rest.

Thank you- do you find the x5 quite high? It’s not as high as a Range Rover sport right?

Thanks. I know the F pace is a Land Rover product, but it’s in the bottom of my price range and I think I can handle the maintenance on their 2l Diesel engines.

Levante, Macan and Cayenne - not really interested in them as they are not as high.

Jeep srt8 consumes way too much fuel. The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s are quite cheap now and feel extremely high (brother has one 3.6 pentastar engine) but the 3.0 CRD’s I found online also seem to have a lot of DPF/reliability problems...


Not really into plug in hybrids but the Q7 E from looks great!

I would go for the XC90, X5 or a VW Touareg, which are all reliable and very capable. The Q7 / Cayenne are nice but expensive to buy and run. There is quite a difference on the road in the delivery between the 2.0 and larger engine models listed here so worth driving them and checking service costs too if you’re planning to keep it a while

Can't say I've noticed any difference but riding high wasn't a priority.

I must say I don't understand why it would ever be. Unless one needs a tractor, has a farm and will use the car for work or will actually off road the car, which in these huge luxury crossovers and pseudo SUVs nobody ever does.

I have a Mercedes GLC350d and I had a 2019 XC90 as a loan car, I couldn't believe how high the XC90 was and you had to climb up to get into it in comparison. The XC90 seriously impressed me and I reckon that it is close to being the ideal SUV.

It was big but it didn't feel that big to drive(only when you parked it in a car park did it feel big). The ride was good, it had 7 seats and a nicely appointed cabin with comfortable seats, and a massive boot too. It has got me seriously considering one for sure.

That’s what I am thinking too! XC90 feels quite big and spacious.

Ideally I want an SUV which you climb into rather than slide into.

Anyone know How does the x5 feel ?

I had a 2004 model X5(4.8iS) and I've driven a 2016 model X5(40d), and I don't recall sitting quite as high as you do in the XC90. I am a big fan of the X5 overall though.

This was my thought process before buying my X5 40d.

Re: the Q7 although a great piece of kit I felt it was just too big. The Volvo (and I'm a fan) I just couldn't live with something so big being powered by a 4 pot..

I thought the same and the 4 pot is its achilles heel in fairness. The one I tried was petrol and whilst it actually didn't feel that gutless, it seemed weird to me paying the high fuel costs(24mpg) for something that isn't very quick.

I like to try the hybrid one though because that is genuinely quick.

If you are short. you can be climbing even into a RS4, So not a very good way of judging it.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Would be great to know how the Q7 feels compared to the 2016 GLE. The GLE350d I drove felt like I was sitting on it and just floored it! The x5 I’ve felt was pretty car like .

Did you find the XC90 drive like a tank? Or more like an Car?
