To be honest, a "car capable of pulling an offroader" is likely to be something like an, er, offroader.

Have you looked at stuff like Suzuki Jimnys or Jeep Cherokees? May be cheaper on insurance than something like a Landy/Disco/Range Rover.

Is there a car for someone to insure at 17 with insurance under £1000?
My first car was a 1.2 Clio in 2000 and that was £1500 to insure.

I think that any vehicle capable of pulling an off-roader on a trailer will have to be of a weight and power which will make it entirely unaffordable for a 17 year old to insure. For what it’s worth, a Fiat Panda diesel for my daughter was £1100 to insure at 17 and that wouldn’t have been able to tow anything more than a skateboard.

Note also that a tow bar will often add significantly to the premium as there’s a greater risk of an accident when towing.

Maybe I should spend £1000 on an off-road able car and then try and get insurance for £2,750, do you think it’s possible? I can only scrape £3,750 at most though it is it worth waiting for a year and building up my NCB

Have you tried NFU for insurance on offroaders ? They used to be really good on Land Rovers, but times may have changed.

You need to revise your wishes/expectations downward a bit for a couple of years. Get yourself the best "sensible" car you can and get a couple of years experience and (hopefully) build up some no-claims bonus to get your insurance down to a reasonable level.

As others have said, something capable of towing an off-roader will be another off-roader, so this doesn't help.

What you also need to consider is that most off-roaders are more complex mechanically than an ordinary road car - and therefore carry the risk of throwing up larger repair bills. At the sort of budget you're talking about, you'll struggle to find any half-decent off-roader, but you have a better chance of getting a decent, reliable "ordinary" car.

Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear as a reply - I know I sound like an old fart (I am) smile

I sometimes think I wish I was a lot younger, but then I see what younger people pay for car insurance, I'm glad I'm a bit older.

Don't worry - there will be plenty of opportunities to own something fun and interesting in the future! smile

I’d scrap the idea of buying your own off-roader unless there’s someone else you could perhaps go halves with on the costs who also has a suitable vehicle. Maybe they do the towing and get to drive for free, something like that?

Re the road car, just get something cheap and slightly off-beat. A Panda diesel is cheapish because it’s utterly undesirable, for example, but there are loads of things you could look at. Remember that older cars may well have higher RFL, so factor this in. If I were looking now I’d probably try to find a reasonable runner for £600 as there will always be things that need fixing.

Think Toyota Yaris, Renault Clio, that sort of thing - and buy privately because at that price level you get nothing from a dealer. The warranty will be worth precisely zero.

That has changed then, a work colleague who was big into LR's (had an example of each series from the first) bought a LandRover for his Daughter and insured it through NFU, she was 17. But it was a few years ago.

No he said they were the best for offroaders because of the farmer connection and their use of offroaders, particularly LandRovers.
