Cheap Stylish Petrol Coupes

Hi all,

I'm after a coupe of some sort. I have a budget of around £7k and it must be petrol and no more than 60-65k miles. Oh and the mrs said no engine larger than 2.0. I would like something mildly sporty as well. I know that kind of seems like a tough criteria.

I was looking at BMW 1 Series coupes, I really like the look and shape but after a bit of researching, mainly on here, people say to stay away from all 4 cylinder BMW's as the engines aren't really reliable. Is that true?

Inclined to dismiss cars like Volvos, Astras and the like as I don't class those as 'proper coupes'. Even the scirocco doesnt look like a proper coupe to me. To me it's just another hatchback but maybe it's a good car?

Oh and no TT's.

Anyway, has anyone got any suggestions as you guys seem like the best people to ask?

My first suggestion would be a Ford Puma, as long as you don’t need the space. A great drive and very underrated.

LOL. Newest one is about, what, 18 years old now! Daily drivers have long since rusted to death and the ones that are left are cherished and will carry the Ford tax.

The obvious answer to this is a Hyundai SIII or Veloster, but the brand sticks in the craw of the PH badge snobs.

The BMW 3.0 petrols are much less trouble than the 4 cylinders (but have their own issues), more powerful and pretty much similar consumption.

So don't rule out a 1 series or E92/3.

Had both and they’re great. Not as reliable as a Lexus but their stylish coupes ain’t cheap.

Not being funny but the reasons could be completely unfounded.

It sounds like what you're looking for is either a 1 or 3 series coupe. Now you could go for a 120i or 320i and it would be well within budget and to be honest perfectly fine. But most will tell you that the 6 pot engines are better which pushes you over that 2.0 limit. Question is, why does that matter?

I've really liked mine in the time I've had it, unless going for the S/RS5 I'd prefer a Diesel personally, drove a 2.0T and a 3.0 TDI before buying and liked the 3 litre Diesel much more.

Other than BMW your budget may stretch to a C class coupe which is a decent looking motor. It'd be the C180 as the C250 is a 2.1 hehe!

Or as someone mentioned, an A5 2.0tfsi would do the job.

I think a BRZ or GT86 is out of budget, especially with your mileage criteria. But you might find a late model, low mileage Celica for a lot less. They look like a proper coupe and feel sporty to drive. Only a 1.8 as well.

Split the difference and get something with the 2.5litre 6pot BMW engine?

Sadly the mpg is no better than that of the 3.0, so you might as.well get that....

Hi everyone,

Some really good suggestions so far. Would love the GT86/BRZ but is ou of budget. The ones that are within budget look quite ropey.

For those asking why it can't be a larger engine than 2.0, it's running costs. It's taken a while to convince her go let me get a new car and with a wedding to save up for, it hasn't been easy.

I don't do many miles so don't want a diesel, plus with the way things are going it probably won't be long until owning a diesel becomes very costly. And I don't like the sounds of diesel engines.

I'm not into hybrids so the Honda doesn't really appeal. I also don't like the coupes that look like the back of the car has been sliced off.

With regards to the Puma, Celica and Fiat, they sadly are just too old for what I'm after. Looking for something with a little luxury as well hence why I was originally looking at the BMW 's.

Anymore suggestions then keep 'em coming.
