Looking for a luxury, well built motor between 4 and 5k. Looking to buy my first saloon or luxury estate

Any advice on choosing newer with high miles or older with low mileage?

Is a ten year old E class, A6, Jag, BMW or Volvo S80 going to prove expensive to run and maintain in the long run? Preferable something 40mpg+

Any suggestions or advice would be great.
