Looking for some low MPG estate car advice - Page 1 - Car Buying

Hello all.

I'm trying to get some advice on the best car for me. At the moment it is a toss up between a:
VW Golf estate
VW Passat
Skoda Octavia estate
Skoda Superb

I'm looking for a combination of best MPG (currently own a Volvo V40), boot space, ride quality (& comfort) & decent acceleration (faster than 0-62 in 10.5s would be great).
I have a budget of around £16,000 and drive approximately 18,000 miles a year (mostly motorways).

A lot depends on the size you require,

Golf Estate and Octavia Estate are mid size estates and probably quite comparable size wise to your V40.

The Passat and Superb are both a class size bigger, I believe the Superb is slightly bigger than the Passat, I'm a big fan of Skoda Superb's personally so that would be my choice, my current car is a V60 for the family and I wish I'd bought the Skoda Superb instead so that's where my money would go.

All will do 50+ mpg and be comfortable, hopefully reliable and shouldn't cost the earth to run.

Superb is huge if you need the space, Octavia and Passat similar size and Golf a little smaller.

The Golf GTD will be quick and have the sporty looks and GTI type interior but more expensive - budget will get you a 2 year old one

Passat will be 1-2 year old, 150bhp so not as quick but a nice car with good spec

Octavia at £16k will get you into a 2 year old VRS, same engine as the GTD I think so quick enough.

Superb Laurin & Klement?

Personally I would go Golf GTD then VRS if I wanted a bit more space. Superb just doesn't look as nice and the Passat is ok but nicIf er cars out there.

However a V90 would trump all those for me.

I have an A4 B9 1.4 tfsi Sport estate, it’s a cracking car, very relaxing to drive, boot space not in the same class as the Passat but it is a quality thing to sit in.

With a diesel engine I’m sure it with be pretty good on fuel. Mine has done about 42mpg from new, which is pretty good for a little petrol in a decent size car.

TBH I've been looking a little higher MPG than the links.

Ideally I would have the car for a while so I've been looking for fairly low millage (20,000 or lower). I was asking more about the MPG vs car feel. Volvo's higher up the range seem to really struggle with MPG and with the amount I travel a hybrid is out of the question.

You do realise that the plug in hybrid diesel V60 is 155mpg & £0 road tax, the D5 diesel hybrid 105 mpg (average) & £0 tax,
the Mercedes is 75mpg.

When you say feel then the Mondeo wins hands down & for the sake 8mpg real world if you take a 150 Auto:

I'm assuming the op might be misunderstanding how hybrids operate. Maybe he thinks they have to be constantly charged. I suppose it's true to some degree as you'll only get the benefit from the hybrid system's economy if you're charging; otherwise you're just lugging around extra weight for no reason.

I was referring specifically to the plug-in hybrids suggested by ZX10R NIN. He didn't list any Toyota Prius's.

The D6 works as a Plug in Hybrid, the D5 is a normal hybrid they both charge & deploy on long runs the only difference is that they're diesels.

I'm pretty sure all the Volvos you listed were plug-ins. But anyway, I was just trying to think why the op may have thought they couldn't work for him. They look like good choices to me.

You're correct I thought I'd listed the normal diesel hybrid, the diesel hybrid actually makes the most sense to me as it's the most fuel efficient combo.

Hey guys, sorry for the late reply.
I have no way of plugging in the hybrid as my garage isn't close to my house. I also have to travel long distances for work occasionally and wouldn't want to be stuck at a refill station for 10 minutes plus.

Leaning towards something like this:

It was pointed out to me yesterday that several towns and cities are planning on barring entry to diesels which could get a bit annoying in the future.

You don't have to recharge the hybrids they do that themselves so there's no need to wait for anything to charge, most cities in the UK will require diesels to be Euro6 even Bristol is planning on going this way now.

So that's the thing to make sure of & with your budget everything you're looking at will be Euro6.
