B8 RS4 vs V60 Polestar
Discussion
Another fast estate thread, but for me it's down to the next car I've got for the next 5 years. Purchasing a house and with good old man maths I'm working out what I've got to get a new car that'll last me a good few years, but obviously has a charm that'll make me want to keep it that long.
Excuse my thinking but here goes..
With the B8 RS4 my bigges thg concern is the gearbox issues? Heard they're very hit and miss and not all that strong. I know they'll drink more than amy Winehouse, I know the parts will be expensive and I know general upkeep will be more than a diesel A4 BUT are they actually as slow as people make out? Heard a remapped A4 2.0 diesel will trump it and although i can live with flaws as not all cars are perfect but is it worth getting mugged off by a boggo car when the RS4 looks so god damn mean? Also, with a remap apparently the gearbox is much easier to live with and theres a little more low down torque, is there any owners on here that can help?
Love the looks, interior, SOUND, last of the N/A screamers and how to the untrained eye in a dark colour it'll merge into every day traffic.
Not too keen on the big(?)running costs, POTENTIAL big issues like gearbox/synchro, very spec dependent (can miss out on some right crackers) and DRC bits and bobs.
Now with the Ovlov. They're rare, left field and the owners group is full of cracking guys who genuinely help you with anything you need. Biggest concern with them is the tendency to chew through the brakes and tyres like nothing. Again is this dependent on brands or is there specific ones to just avoid?
Love the rarity, how fully loaded they are standard, all the Important bits are big brands like ohlins for the suspension, the colour rebel blue is gorgeous, no one really knows about them other than us (sleeper) and I think they're actually pretty quick and tuneable
Not keen on the fact they're quite hard to get a hold of and can sometimes be seen as an old man's car.
I know theres alot of info and questions tied up in all of that but I want to make sure I've looked at every possible route first before buying either. Like I've said it'll be a big buy and my missus is happy with either, she prefers the image of the RS whereas I prefer the tuneabilty and rarity of the ovlov. Cheers!
Current ones for case examples are a black V60 for 21K with 35,000 miles and Black RS4 with milltek exhaust for 25K with 55,000 miles.
Ps I'd also love a cls63 shootingbrake but once I start looking at those it's just a black hole with then looking at other competitors etcetc.

I've owned both a B8 Audi A4 and I currently own a V60, I won't go into engines and performance as the models you are looking at are different.
In terms of the cars ownership experience and quality I found the Audi (S-line) to be a far nicer place to sit in, seats felt probably equally as comfortable but better made materials, all the interior, plastics on the dash, infotainment system, steering wheel, you name it really felt a step above the Volvo I currently have, sadly mine was stolen with keys after they broke in my house which put me off another Audi, some of my neighbours had equally nice cars from Merc and BMW and were left alone.
The Volvo is it's replacement, the materials inside don't feel as good, more Ford quality than Audi, the drivers seat bolster is quite badly split now, sure it could be user error but in the 30 or so cars I've owned I've never done that to a seat before and I haven't suddenly ballooned in size or lost my agility to cause it. The infotainment system is no where near as good as Audi's, Sat nav is not a nice thing to use at all. I've also had numerous electrical issues with the Volvo, particularly door locks which are £300 a door to replace at a independent specialist.
Of your two choices I'd be going Audi, or maybe the Merc as you mention at the end,

That's a shame about the volvo, heard really good things on them but like you said it's a different spec so could possibly be due to that (not knocking you in anyway, just to clarify) and possibly rectified it on more exclusive stuff?
The polestar really appeals to me and seems the better package altogether but I want a V8 before the world goes even more cuckoo but dont want to rule with my heart more than my head, especially given how much more it COULD potentially cost me. Think it boils down to the day of driving it and seeing if I want to work for my power or have that ever present turbo do most the work for me whilst returning more mpg and realistically the same thrills 80% of the time, as let's face it we dont all spend our time nailing the car through every corner and straight. Surely the noise of the RS is worth the extra few K? 🤔

The Polestar is a cracking car but the Nav is shocking (it's the same one that was put in Aston Martins) the stereo is a bit weak but it can be improved with some replacement speakers.
Audi wins on the interior & that cracking V8 some people will tell you it lacks torque but it's only the 6.2 AMG & 6.2LS that make it seem this way BMW/Lexus are all on par.
It's a special engine but the Polestar is special too, personally I think I'd go for the Polestar having had an RS4 I think I'd go leftfield & get the Volvo but if you can find a very rare Alpina B3 Estate then that beats both.

Unless I'm naive but always thought the nav in the volvo was alright? Happy to hear opposite though so I can atleast expect the worst! Speakers arent a main thing for me but after seeing the options for it on the Audi it would be nice to have something a little nicer than a focus' tin cans
Yes the engine in the RS is a selling point for me, along with the snappy changes but real world surely the polestar is just as quick? As you've owned the RS can you please tell me your personal pros and cons with the car and what to expect bill's wise?
RS is more expensive for lower mileage ones so may even give me an incentive to earn more and save for a nicer example. Reckon a 50k odd miles is too leggy?
