Hi all,

just thinking about my next car purchase - when I'm eventually allowed to go car shopping!

Now, I am quite close to pressing go on an ST220 Estate, however....

I'm wondering if i'm better off getting a more practical estate, and a faster bit on the side.

So what would you do?

I can go to about £3,500 for the daily driver. Then I'd be happy to spend around £10k on the "toy"

I don't want to spend £13,500 on the daily as it's really going to have a dull, hard life i.e. I want to be able to chuck tools and stuff in the boot and not worry about scratching the thing, dog will go in it, bikes will go in it etc.

SO..... what would you get? is the ST220 still the best option for the daily? or would I be better served in something else, then commit to more money on a proper toy....and then what toy??

probably won't be lots of miles anymore - will be based at home going forward which cuts it down a LONG way, it's more a case it's going to have a harder life and I want something that won't mind getting a bit trashed.

Get the ST220 then work out what you want from your toy, or if you need two/four seats etc.

yeah think you're right, I can't find something to tick the daily box better than the ST220. Still be fun as a daily, not too new that i'll worry about banging it etc.

I think the toy is still going to need to be somewhat practical, I mean I do have a little boy, and a wife....they might want to come out in it I guess..... So would all need a seat I 'spose.

Doggo won't be allowed though haha

We have had an ST220 estate for over nine years. It was bought as a temporary measure but it is so good we just kept it.

We have five cars in the household and they come and go however, the ST has stayed with us. It is used for kids transport but the boot is huge so it does all sorts of jobs. It is as happy doing the school run, the tip run, helping to move house or pressing on during European trips.

We have a couple of moderately exciting dailies but a fun car for the weekend.

I would go for the ST 220, or equivalent, and then something like a Z4, 370Z, SLK55.

Make it a bit practical you're more likely to use it if you can all go out in it.
