Anyone used them?

I enquired about a car recently which was for sale by a broker / car finder. I didn't buy it, but he said he could probably find what I wanted at the price of £680+VAT.

Has anyone used such a service and are these people able to find things that I won't just by staying in touch with main dealers and Auto Trader?

I'll find you a car for £680 including the VAT. What you want?

I’ve not used one, but I sold my 4C through Supercar Sourcing.
My car wasn’t actively for sale, but he had a client looking for one and so was an intermediary.

All very professional and easy.
Don’t know what he charged though.

How did he make contact with you?

I think through here - he’s an active member.

We use a couple for rare stuff as they tend to have access to people who have cars that are not marketed but would consider selling.

There are a lot out their that are smoke and mirrors so we always agree their payment on transaction completion.

Interesting.

I presume they find the car, collect/inspect it, then deliver it to your door.

Sounds ok, but who will your contract of sale be with?

Ie, if you have a fault?

Will the retailer say they sold it trade to "car finding services"?

In my case, Joe from Supercar Sourcing came to look at my car, took photos etc and sent them to the buyer.
Buyer then contacted me and did the deal directly with me, and came to collect the car himself. (On a dark and rainy Friday night - he drove the car from Nottingham back home to somewhere north of Edinburgh I believe..)

I assume he just paid the broker his finders fee.

In the case of the car I enquired about, the car was owned by the previous owner. But then again, so are a lot of cars in dealerships.

Would you have been buying that privately then?

SOR cars at dealerships will still be classified as a retail sale if you pay the dealer.

I'm not trying to throw spanners in the works, I'm interested in exactly what you get for the fee.

We didn't get that far, so I really don't know. The chap is a limited co. trading in motor vehicles I believe, so I'd have thought that there would be some recourse and if one wanted to use finance, probablt that would be OK. If I recall correctly, finance companies have to have an invoice from a dealer.

What you get if you use a good one is peace of mind.

They'll go & look at number of cars on your behalf then do the necessary checks like using a Micrometer on the paint to check for any repair work using a reader to check on any issues that may have been cleared recently & so on.

Basically you're paying for them to do all the leg work but you buy the car directly from the seller, if you buy often from the group you'll normally be able to get a bigger discount as well as being able to find cars that are held in stock/not listed anywhere.

Most of the time you negotiate off more than your fee.

Ok.

If he's a dealer, and you pay the money to him, then your contract will be with him.

If you go ahead, you should clarify this.

You just need to know who you'll be going to if you have any problems.

Last thing you'd want is the retailer telling you they didn't sell you the car, or the agent telling you they didn't supply you the car.

I guess it really depends on who you pay the money to.

I can see the appeal. How much time do you/we spend looking for our own cars? I know personally I have spent hours, days doing it. For some people that time is too precious to waste. Plus, in winter it's next to impossible to see a car on a weekday during daylight hours for many of us.

Hello!

In your case the buyer just paid a small finders fee and we ran the introduction and agreed the sale price. Every deal is different and depends on rarity of the car etc. We broker some, we cash flow others so the buyer can finance. Fees agreed at the start of the search and only payable on a sale.

It seemed to all work pretty well too.
(And now I’m regretting selling it... cry )
