I am looking at buying a "new" car and like the look of the Lexus NX 2016/2017.
However I don't know anybody who owns one or has ever owned a Lexus. Are they reliable and compared to BMW/Merc how expensive is the servicing?
Also what are the known issues to look out for? I've got a Kia Sportage at the moment and was surprised at the amount of known issues after I bought it that I don't want to be caught out again.

Don't know about the NX specifically but I've got an LS460 that I use as a daily runabout and it's very reliable.
It definitely loses out dynamically to the equivalent Merc or BMW, but it's a much simpler car that uses a lot of Toyota parts so it's a good ownership prospect. In terms of refinement you'd struggle to find something better. I guess you need to weigh up those factors to see if it suits you.

Majority of Lexus are really reliable, I think the main things with the NX are that they aren't as sharp or exciting to drive as their German equivalents, the infotainment systems takes some getting used to as well and the boots not as big as it could be.
They do fixed price servicing so you can go on their website and check the price for the model and type of service.
Apart from that they are meant to be decent and Lexus dealers will bend over backwards to help you out, they really put most other dealers to shame in customer service.
One worry to keep in mind is that thefts of the catalytic converter as these get good money and is quite common, people can rob them easily without even having to lift the car I've heard.

Yes, the Lexus is, both statstically and anecdotally, likely to be more reliable, better built, and longer lived than basically anything made by anyone else. If you're buying privately with an eye to long term ownership you probably can't do any better.

As others have said Lexus reliability makes BMW/Mercs look very very poor.Main dealer servicing is the same price as BMW but service intervals are shorter, however any Independent garage can service them.
Our current IS300H is the most reliable car we have ever owned, my old BMW 3 series was the 2nd most unreliable.
Over 5 years old now and the engine bay is almost 'as new', its dusty in there because it never needs to be worked on!! Doesn't even use a drop of oil, even the 12V battery is still going strong. No turbos, timing belts, clutches, DPFs to worry about either!!
Lexus are so confident it's not going to break down their AA*** family package European road recovery package (with hotel + onwards travel cover) cost £110 a year, the same level of cover on the AA website is over double that amount as an introductory offer and over £400 /year 'normal' price.
You got nothing to worry about when it comes to Lexus and reliability. Combined with £10 a year VED, a true 50mpg (NX is closer to 35mpg due to been heavier), it's a very very cheap and dependable family car to own long term, hence used prices are much stronger than an equivalent age BMW/Mercedes etc.

I am currently driving an NX300h - This Is my 2nd one. No issues at all to to report. Services are 10,000 miles or every 12 months, I took out a service plan to cover these with Lexus. Around 40 mpg on my 27 miles to and from work (12 miles Motorway, 12 miles A roads, 3 miles Urban) Handles and drives well and a lovely place to be in.
If you can, try for a 2018 onward model - slight cosmetic facelift larger nav unit and minor revisions All around. Michelin Cross climate tyres also improve ride further, and will give worry free all year round driving.

I was being somewhat tonque-in-cheek - our Honda and Mitsubishi also renewed the assistance package with each service. I don't think it's that unusual.

Our local Lexus main dealer wants about £300 for a basic oil service, I've also never had any dealer offer breakdown cover with service, not with Nissan/Honda/BMW/Tesla.
I would say keep going with your main dealers!!

If you get it main dealer serviced they warranty the hybrid components for another year up to 10 years old or something. Rest of it is unlikely to break anyway hence the reasonable cost although do read the fine print as the one I had had a clause in requiring dealer servicing. gangzoom said:

Thanks for all the great info. I feel fairly confident now that this will be a reliable vehicle. I also spoke to the dealer and they were honest enough to agree that the hybrid's are not very responsive when merging with traffic.Edited by gangzoom on Saturday 6th June 05:56
That is now the only thing giving me pause as I was looking for something pokey that responds quick in slipping into traffic.
The dealer has advised I do a test drive and see how I feel about it.
Yes, they are absolutely reliable. Lexus sells over 100k mileage cars(RX) with two years warranties on their approved used section... I used to own Mercedes GLC Coupe, not so bad but Lexus is a better place to be. My family used to own Land Rovers (Disco and FL), I would not even accept one free today
