above suggests 1.25 petrol has choice of 60 or 82hp from same engine , is it easy to tell which is which ? can the lower output one be changed to 82 with simple bolt on's

half interested in getting one , would prefer the higher output

Slightly lower state of tune but will be different injectors, compression ratio and ecu ignition map. It would cost far more to convert than actually buying the 82ho version.
If it's not insurance group related go for the 1.4 (1388cc).
Mines done 125k miles now, never been apart and have done dozens of distance European runs in it. Both the 1.25 and 1.4 are pretty much bullet proof.
The only things apart from servicing I've had to replace are the coil pack, heater hoses and the 2 little cylinder head core plugs between the spark plugs (these can leak causing a miss fire) but an easy diy job and cost less than £6.

A quick Google and read of some ford fiesta forums seems to suggest that a remap might be the only difference between the two engines.

Looking at the co2 emissions on the v5/ gov tax check website should tell you which is which based on the registration plate.
