Any experts on Mk 5 Golfs?

Hi all,

Following on from the thread on the £1,000 cars, I have been looking at Mk 4 1.6 Golfs, but most of them are not ULEZ compliant.

I have seen this Mk5 Auto one with 82k miles.

I've spoken to the owner who said he is looking for a £1.5k quick sale.

What do people think? Is the 1.6 auto a good combination? What sort of things should I look out for? I asked about the cambelt and he said it has a chain so doesn't need replacing. Apparently the fuel injectors were replaced in February.

Pistonheads advice seems to state that the engine is uninspiring, but I live in London - apparently my current lease car goes from 0-60 in 7 seconds, but I am not sure if I have driven straight to 60 from a start. I also think I am going to let my girlfriend use it to learn to drive so I don't want a speed machine.

If it is a good price, reliable, small jobs can be done by me and a Haynes manual and it is comfortable then I think I would be happy with it.

Its missing a headrest, the headlights want replacing as they will struggle to go through an MOT, the engines carbon up, the gearbox isn't the most reliable and you want to see that its had its oil changes - the last one should have been 2000 miles ago.

You wan't something reliable, an early Mk5 Golf isn't it. Go and buy a Honda or Toyota.

Thanks mate. I just don't like Toyotas, unless we are talking Celica, Supra, GT86, MR2 etc.

I had a 1.8 civic but mine was manual.

Economy was okay, just short of 40mpg mostly and I do like to put my foot down a bit.

Civic ishift is truly awful and that one looks like it has had a very hard life.

As regards the Golf, I spoke to the guy selling it. He has said that in order to have it SORNd, he has it parked up at a garage about 10 miles from his house and wants me to meet him there. He also says that someone else is interested, but can't come until Wednesday, so he has offered to meet me tomorrow at the garage.

This doesn't feel quite right to me, not meeting someone at their home address, the extra pressure of the additional buyer. Also, he seems keen to take less than the ebay bid. He says I can have it for £1,500 but the bid is at £1,650 with several days to go.

Would others share this sense of doubt?

looks to me the current owner has only had it for a week and is looking to sell on again.

That always rings alarm bells.

Sounds like a trader trying to shift a p/x to a private seller without having to provide warranty, etc.

He has texted me this morning. I've said that I will call him after the ebay auction has ended. I can't see his motivation in looking to sell it to me at £1,500 when the ebay bid is now £1,750.
