Considering a 2015-17 Outlander PHEV

Thinking of changing my scout for an Outlander. I'm moving to around 5 miles from the office, so don't want a diesel. Budget around 16k. There was a model change in 2015/16 so that is the target and the electric option means pretty much never stopping for petrol on the commute (supposedly does 30 miles without petrol).

Anything I should look out for? Any alternatives I should consider on that budget? It's not the nicest looking car, but has a lot of toys and only really needed for commuting/dogs (3 large).

I do also have motorbike and pushbike for commute, this is for when there is even slight risk of rain and because I want a new toy!

I had a 2014 model for 3 years from new. Wouldn't do 30 miles on electricity, 25 miles around town is more realistic, less on the motorway.

Mine was the GH3X (something like that) which meant it did not have an electric heater, so in the winter any demand for in car heating meant the petrol motor fired up.

If I remember correctly I got something like 80 mpg over the 3 years. My daily commute into the city of around 20 miles was solely on electric (except if I wanted to be warm!) and it achieved about 35mpg on a long journey once the battery was depleted.

the 2016 model is supposedly 90kg lighter and a few other changes so likely the model of choice, which is a shame as lots of 2014/15 models around.

Looks like an outland is still the best option - but anything else I should consider? Petrol/EV, bulky (SUV/4X4), automatic preferred, 12-16.5k budget.

Do not get a Outlander PHEV, I had one for 3 years and the Plug in Hybrid part was basically a gimmick

It’s not a gimmick, if you are doing relatively short (25 miles or less) journeys/commutes you can get excellent fuel consumption.
It won’t work for everyone, you just need to understand the workings of the car which the OP clearly does.

It is & isn't a gimmick they're good at what they're designed for which is short round trips of less than 25 miles, what they can do but aren't so good at is longer journeys where there fuel consumption drops to between 28-35mpg & at this point there are better SUV's out there.

If you aren’t going to be using it primarily in an urban environment then you won’t be getting the benefit of the hybrid system, and at higher speed it’s just a not very efficient one speed Internal combustion engined SUV.

OP the other option is to keep what you currently have and not spend £16k / keep it in the bank as who knows what’s going to happen job wise - that £16k will then become far more valuable than it in a newer depreciating asset.

I appreciate the input but I'm not looking for financial advice - I want a new car

To recap...something big (bored of estates), average trip is 5-10 miles a day (office/taking dogs out). I also have a transporter so don't want another diesel (and have had too many DPF issues with recent diesels and the short distances I do). Petrol option is fine, PHEV seemed sensible though isn't a must.

I know a chap who bought one that was formerly a company car, in 3 years it had never been plugged in, ran only as a hybrid. Because of this it had buggered the battery and wouldn’t take a full charge, although Mitsubishi said there was nothing wrong with it!

Big fan of the Ranger, but can't live with a pickup, won't suit our needs.

I hadn't considered a lexus - thanks, I'll do some reading.

I suspect the Outlander is perfect for what I want, but I rushed into buying the last 2 cars (scout (not a bad car) and Kia Sportage (terrible)) so just checking I haven't missed another good option.
