Looking for £10k family car - is it crazy to get diesel?

Hi,
I’m looking to spend around £10k on a used family car and have narrowed it down to a Kia Sportage and a Mazda CX-5.
The sportage is petrol and the Mazda is diesel. I expect the type of journeys I need it for would suit a diesel car however I’m concerned about the drive to punish diesel cars.
The Mazda is ULEZ compliant - do you think it’s worth buying, with the risk of further punishment down the line, or is it safer to stick to the petrol sportage?

Buy the Kia, Mazda diesels are not that reliable.

Out of the two I'd say buy the Kia but in diesel form if it suits your needs then get a diesel there's no more extra taxation as your diesel will be Euro6 & Euro7 is a while away.

I'd also say look at the Kuga:

imo it's a better car than the Sportage, the Mazda diesels still seem to be suffering a few reliability issues around the timing chain area but it's not as bad as it used to be.

I have a diesel & have no fears about future taxation buy the drivetrain that suits you, even Bristol is now reviewing it's policy & are looking at going to a Euro based system.
