50k pa reliable auto, cheap and comfy..boring ok! £8k

Hi folks,
Got a new job (yes I’m really lucky in this COVID age) having lost my current one, on the flip side rather than driving 800mile round trip to work once a month.....it’s now every week! So will be realistically doing anywhere between 40-50k miles pa, almost all of it on the motorway.
I don’t get a company car allowance and currently have an old 4x4 that copes ok with the trip once a month giving about 35mpg, but I’m keen to get something a bit comfier and easier to drive that’s also economical too.
I don’t want to spend too much as it’s going to be worth nothing in a a couple of years commuting, so was thinking around 8k or so and any suggestions welcome.
I know it’s dull, but thinking along the lines of a Golf Mk7, Jetta 1.6 diesel DSG which should return realistically around 55mpg. Cheers!

That is a long old commute! Congrats on the new job as well. I’d imagine a golf would be fine. I have an A3 so the same platform I probably do 20k ish a year so half of what you will be doing but I couldn’t see any problems.
I don’t know anything about the 1.6. Mine is 2.0 diesel and I still get good economy so you should be fine.
I would also look at Mondeos and Volvos are highly recommended on here as well.

I have no specific model recommendations, but ensure you get radar cruise, sat nav with traffic (or a phone mount + Waze), very comfy seats/driving position, and a decent stereo - ideally one that lets you play audio books and/or your own music.

You need to think hard about running costs as well as purchase price. At that mileage, spending a bit more for a small improvement in fuel economy wont take long to pay for itself. Also don't underestimate the difference that things like adaptive cruise control will make to your life if you're spending that much time in the car.

Thanks guys, yeah the Superb looks like a beast alright...had a taxi back from the airport a few years ago and couldn’t believe how nice it was. I think the driver thought I was taking the pee but it was bloody lovely!
Bit of a crazy commute but it’s a really good job and allows us to keep our home (thought we’d lose it) and new job has an element of home working so may be more like head up for 2-3 days in the office once a week. Comfort had to be a priority though but with the caveat of cheap and reliable. I had a 2015 Golf GTD DSG from new and it was utterly brilliant, Just demolished the big trips with ease. That would be nice but is a bit out my price range and the 1.6 Bluemotion engine seems a lot more efficient and cheap to run.

That looks bloody fantastic but is a manual, I really can’t be ar**d with manual now tbh....I will have a look at other Superbs though. Cheers mate!kambites said:
The Octavia is rather loud inside for doing massive motorway miles in. The Superb is probably not a bad bet, though.
I had a 2016 Superb and was unbelievably disappointed with it, might be better on 16/17” wheels if they do them though. I found the seats to be awful, flat with no support, and it was generally quite loud inside.
Might be good as a taxi, they’re big and comfy for passengers on short journeys, but I wouldn’t want to drive one 400 miles.

OP: Don’t underestimate how important comfort is, I’d take comfort over economy at your mileage.
I’d be looking at a 1 series with sports seats, a C Class or even an Insignia

Nothing more comfy than a big Citroen Estate......ideal motorway car and the 2.2 is very good.

Yeah I get the comfort bit, auto, Bluetooth and nice interior with air con makes a massive difference tbh. I don’t mind a long drive too much if I’ve got a load of podcasts to listen to.
