Would you buy a car in this situation?
Discussion
So I’m just after some advice really, I’m looking at a car tomorrow after already having a deposit down I really like it so would be happy to drive away with it.
However I have still got my current car, I am waiting on a new V5 Then after I get that I can put the number plates on the car on retention, then wait for another v5, once I get this V5 I can then take the car to a we buy any car or something similar and sell the car.
The issue I’m having is it’s going to cost me 145 on insurance to change the car, then I would need to open up a new policy on the “old” car for a month or so (not sure exactly how long) until I can sell it. This is proving to be costly as it’s likely to cost around 160-200 for the first month and then around 60-90 a month after that then a cancellation fee as well.
The other problem is I work away, currently doing 2 weeks on 2 weeks off, so I’m coming towards the end of my 2 weeks on, so should go home for a couple, the “old” car would be sat there until I manage to get everything in order and sell the car, however if I don’t have the V5 by the time I’m next back at work, I would be delayed by a lot longer.
This all just seems like a lot of hassle, would you go through with it to get a car you want, or is there any other suggestions of what could solve any of these problems? Or just sack it all off until a time I’m more prepared?
I would lose some of my deposit but may be worth cutting my losses.
Thanks, Josh.

Depends on parking arrangements at home, insurance, tax etc
Sounds like your old car is not worth too much so if you've got a driveway i'd just SORN and uninsure it and leave it sat till you need to work out the next step with it. Current insurance would then go onto new car and be road legal provided you tax it

If the car is something special, in that if it is rare, or has sentimental value, or is important to you for whatever reason then buy it and go through the hassle that you described,However I have still got my current car, I am waiting on a new V5 Then after I get that I can put the number plates on the car on retention, then wait for another v5, once I get this V5 I can then take the car to a we buy any car or something similar and sell the car.

If its just a run of the mill, regular car of which there are many others that you could easily find, then its probably better to wait until later. The only other option would be asking the seller to hold on to it for you until you are ready to take delivery, and keep it insured by them for the time being. If its a dealer that may be possible; a private seller would be harder I guess.
Hope that helps.
I would be leaving it in a car park at work so leaving uninsured might be a bit risky, the car is still worth 6 grand. The seller won’t hang about as he’s after a quick sale and has other offers, it’s a car I’ve wanted for a while, isn’t necessarily rare or anything but it’s seems in good nick, it’s a seat Leon fr 2016 2.0tdi 184 with a dsg gearbox for just over 10k. I put 250 deposit down and expect to lose 60 quid.

Guessing that is both cars being left in work car park? If you not got home off road parking then makes things a little trickier. Could look in putting it in a secure storage yard or similar like you would a caravan for a set fee per weekI would be taking the new one home, leaving the old one at work in the car park, then hopefully when I return I could sell the car and all is good, it’s just the cost of having the car sat there is the issue, I’ve worked out I think I can get it for around 185 for a month with cancellation fee and extra 66 a month if I need longer. Rather than risk it in a car park, or I can look to see anywhere secure I can keep it.

Have you spoke to your current insurance company to get the new car on the existing policy? A chap I work with bought another car and added it to his existing car policy for £35 to the date of his annual renewal which was 3 months.
I asked them and they said due to me not being 25 it couldn’t be done, not sure why really but would’ve been ideal like.Oakesj103 said:

Some are more flexible than others, I couldn't do it on my last change over and ended up with 2x policies tho luckily i got my NCB matched so wasn't too expensive. Where as previously when I'd changed over the company had added both cars for as long as i needed for £20Can you add the new car to your insurance and move your current car as a temp car until you sell it?
I managed to do this last year when I impulse bought a golf GTi, but still had to sell my BMW.
I was looking at buying a years insurance and canceling as you said in an earlier post. My insurers (Admiral) advised to insure the new car (GTi) as the main car and add the BMW as on temp cover. I think I paid £40 for 2 months cover (fully comp) for this. I wasn't aware this was possible until the insurance rep suggested it.
Worth asking your insurers.
