Hi All,
My son is/was interested in a car advertised through the auspices of this forum.
Although it is 7 years old, it is advertised with a mileage of just under 18K.
I went on the government website to check the MOT history and it states that in 2017, it had done 22k, in 2018 it had done 26K, but in 2019 it had done just 11 (eleven) K and it is currently being advertised as 18K.
By some means, between 2018 and 2019, the mileage reduced 15K - is there any legitimate away, by which this anomaly can be explained ?

A shame that we should need to make such checks though; as already mentioned, had my son purchased the car, if he wanted to sell it on, he'd have a problem explaining the mileage. Given that the mileage has been reduced, no-one can know how many miles it has actually done.
Another rule for buying a car
(4) If it looks very good 'value', be very suspicious.
I think you've pretty much got it nailed but as a previous posted mentioned, it'd just maek it more difficult to sell on at a later date.
It's a bugger as it's not even a massive, though double, mileage jump. It's hardly like 30k (assumed) is a massive mileage on a car of that age, assuming it's not an exotic.

You're quite right about the mileage - something in the 30K region isn't that high. For me, it's a question of trust, if someone's gone to the trouble to lower the mileage, what else might come to the surface in future ?

If that's the case the seller should be stating 44,000 miles, or thereabouts.
Maybe the seller is unaware, have you asked them?
Might be worth some more research if there isn't others out there, and a little drop in price of course.

100,000's cars out there....go for another if not happy, buy in haste repent at leisure
What do the floor mats look like?....worn? then maybe more miles than suggested?
pedal rubbers worn? gear stick look worn (one handed driving, and ring marks on older higher miles cars)
Steering wheel worn?
Wheel rims kerbed or as new?
Original tyres? likely to be if that low a mileage?
Stone chips on front of car....loads then maybe more miles....or they just drive too close to car in front
Drivers seat showing wear?
Service history?

(having said that my 17 year old bought a 5k car for a first one, and now 19 without a prang) (my daughter bought a shedish car 1k as a first....and just as well she did, she ain't bothered by kerb scars, minor walls jumping out at her etc...)
