Help buying a first car

Hello all,

I wondered if I could get some help on the cars below?

My girlfriend and I are buying our first car and not really sure what we are looking for.

Which car below is preferable? We aren’t too worried about aesthetics.

Also, are Cat S cars better avoided?

It's definitely easier to avoid anything that's been written off unless you know what you're doing and are happy with what it entails. There's nothing wrong with a Polo of course but I'm going to throw a Japanese car into the mix. There's loads to choose from but how about a Swift?

I tend to find the German quality is in their marketing where Japanese quality is in how they build their engines! Having said that, I've owned 4 German, or German derived, cars...

We quite like the Polo as a car, but I'll look into the Japanse ones too.

Do you have any opinions on which Polo is best from the ones posted?

With your budget I'd be looking for a nice Astra they're reliable well made plus you'll get a nicely spec'd one for sensible money.
