Afternoon

Im selling my car on autotrader and a dealer has agreed a price with me.

He has also paid a deposit.

I asked him what dealer he worked at and phoned the dealer on their advertised number through google.

The guy that answered the phone confirmed the guy works for them remotely as a buyer.

They are sending a driver to pick the car up next week and have agreed that payment has to be made in full before the car leaves my drive.

However I asked for a contract to be signed and was told this is unnecessary as they are a dealer etc. I insisted and was told ok get the driver who picks the car up to sign it!

Im unsure wether to accept this! any thoughts

Contract?
Just yellow slip it and take the cash, simple.

It’s not Sytner by any chance is it?

Anyway, I’ve been in the same scenario: listed car on AT, contacted by a (very dodgy sounding) dude who was genuinely retained by Sytner to trawl AT listings looking for decent cars that they could buy and sell on as Approved Used. I spoke to the less dodgy sounding bloke at Sytner who paid the money and sent a driver to pick up the car from my drive.

Assuming the dealer isn’t Trotter’s Independent Traders or similar, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Sold my last car the same way, contacted by a guy through AT, he gave me a price that he would pay, said he was a buyer that sold onto trade. was a bit dubious at first, Googled his company and all was legit. Arranged a viewing, he said if car was as described he’d transfer money straight away and take car away. He turned up, checked over car transferred the money and took the car away. I maybe didn’t get as much as I would have done if I’d waited weeks/months for a buyer but it was a fair price that I was happy with. Nice guy and a very easy way to shift the car.

The buyer will have purchase invoices on them that they'll fill out for you so you've got a copy of the sale.

Make sure you do the yellow slip, online is best as it records the time it's done.

They're not going to give you a water tight contract before they've seen the car.

They have to see that the car matches the description you've given them/written in advert.

Chaps

I didn't mean a formal contract I meant the usual sold as seen stuff you download off the internet. Just wondered how valid it was if signed by a driver?

No it's not Sytner but his dealer who he represents sells some serious metal.

He does sound dodgy though but your replies have made me feel much better so cheers...

What's worrying you?

If your gut instinct is telling you something's wrong then listen to it as it's saved me many times.

I do pretty much the same job as this chap you describe.

So fire away if you have any concerns.

I don't get the issue. This is how dealers buy cars. I had one collect a car off me yesterday and all he did was take a quick look and pay.

I sold my M4 Competition the same way. They turned up and paid.

This is a hundred times better than dealing with the public. Tossers agreeing prices and then trying to find fault with the car. Imaginary problems with low tread despite me having a tread depth gauge etc etc.

I have another car up for sale and I wish a trader would offer a bit more for it as it would be gone without the hassle.

You don't need a contract with them. They pay you and you retain the yellow slip and give them the rest of the V5. You can do it online as well.
