Petrol estate - Golf R or Superb Sportline or?

Evening,

We are currently in the process of buying a new car. We going to become parents for the first time in the near future so the 3 door hatch back has to go!

We do very little mileage overall, lots of short journeys with the odd road trip to see family and friends around the UK so we are looking at petrol models, we both like abit of performance so we have, after a number of test drives, come up with the final two contenders:

Golf R estate mk7.5
Skoda Superb Sportline Estate 272/280

We have a budget of up to 25k, we like our cars to have abit of performance and are looking to get a dog early next year.

We have disregarded:
Octavia VRS - really really loud road noise (possibly down to 19 inch wheels though)
Numerous suv's - neither of us like them much and the wagons seem to offer more space for the £
VW Passat - seem to not really be worth the premium over the Golf or Skoda
Audi A4 avant - boot to small
Audi A6 avant - petrols are too many ££
BMW 3 series - lots of experience driving these - Golf seems better value for ££
BMW 5 series - want the 540i xdrive but to many ££
Mercedes - not a fan

Are we missing anything?

Does anyone have any experience of the Golf or the Superb or any other suggestions?

Good shout on this one. They come with adaptive dampers as standard where very few Golf Rs have them specced. Also have the choice of a manual, if that's your bag... but only if you're willing to sacrifice all wheel drive.

The boot isn't that big though. On paper it's only a wee bit bigger than an A4 Avant (which has been discounted) and isn't as practically shaped as the Golf estate, so if the OP and his partner are going to be having a dog and getting a baby as well, then I'd be opting for something bigger like the Superb.

Worth checking the BMW 540i out for deals. I didn't think I could afford a 5 series touring. I originally looked at Golf R and Octavia vrs estate but ended up getting a far better deal on my new 540i msport xdrive touring. The deals per month was almost identical between them. The Superb 280 was more expensive per month.

The Superb is a great car though. But not as superb as my 540i

The 7/7.5 Golf is in my opinion one of the most complete cars money can buy. Everything is well thought out and *just works*.

I had a 7.5 R Estate after a 7 GTI PP and both were excellent. Nothing whatsoever annoyed me or felt badly thought out. Things like the ACC and Lane Assist are especially good - and this is from someone who had a Model X with Autopilot at the same time (which, ironically, isn't as good).

The Superb 280 is a fantastic cruiser that happens to have a reasonable turn of pace - it isn't really in the same ballpark as the Golf R for outright performance though. That said, they are very good cars, but typically a generation behind in terms of tech.

What do you want? A huge family mile muncher or a hot hatch that isn't a nightmare when you're on family duty?

I have an RS4 and the boot is big enough for an adult Weimaraner (35kg), but it is definitely smaller than my old Golf Estate boot.

C6 RS6 is within your budget, best all rounder you can buy for the money

I've owned both a Golf and a Leon and the difference in capacity of the boot is purely in the slightly sharper angle on the rear window. While that affects the litres VW and SEAT quote it makes virtually no difference in the real world.

The Leon got me through several staycations with myself, other half and baby. It's a great package.

Leon ST boot is manageable with baby and dog, but you do need to pack carefully. I have a roof box for added capacity. You also don't get much front passenger space with a typical baby car seat.



It's workable and the car is a great all rounder, but if you're happy with the Superb I'd go with that to be honest, they're absolutely massive and it will make life much easier!

My first thought is if an A4.boot is too small then a Golr estate boot will be worse?

Also as someone said above dont underestimate the size of a rear facing carpet for a baby, they take up hugs amounts of space. You may find dependant on the height of whoever is in the passenger seat that they are going to be very uncomfortable by the time you have the baby seat in and have the front passenger seat pushed forward to accommodate it.

I see the appeal of the Golf R but the Skoda is going to be the far more comfortable and practical option.

Golf R estate actually has a bigger boot than the A4 I think.

The issue is adding a dog - with just a baby a normal hatch is big enough if you're sensible, but adding a dog into the mix complicates things. Personally I'd wait to get a dog until you only need a buggy, not the full on £2k Bug-a-boo Donkey Max pushchair - makes packing way easier.
