What car for house renovations
Discussion
My wife and I have an offer accepted on a house, which is great news as i'll finally have a garage attached to where i live.
The house is 1930's and needs renovation, new kitchen, bathroom, driveway plus some walls knocked down etc. I'd rather not destroy the boot of the M5 or my wife's 1 series so am planning to free up £2k or so in budget for a car for me to use during the works.
I don't want a full on van but the three options i can think of are 90's estate, Pickup or Jeep.
Some that have always been on my radar for this type of stuff include:
W124 Estate
https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1240910
as an example but not sure if i'll find anything good for my budget.
Pickup-wise i knnow nothing about them but what about a Ford Ranger?
https://www.gumtree.com/p/ford/ford-ranger-mk2-xlt...
Or finally how about an old P38 or L322 type 4x4?
https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1117389
Any thoughts welcome

Fiat Doblo,
Huge rear compartment, dirt cheap, you won't give any * about it, so when you sell it after the renovation won't care.
Can get all sorts in the back plus additional storage up front, some versions will have wheel chair conversions allowing you low loading for heavy items like cement or bricks.
Ugly as * so dent or spilled paint just add character.

If it’s just for renovation works the surely an Octavia estate or ford galaxy with the seats down would be ideal and could both be had for under a grand?
Or is it just an excuse to buy a jeep/pickup so the missus can’t moan?
Ill admit there IS an element of sneaking something semi interesting onto the drivewayOr is it just an excuse to buy a jeep/pickup so the missus can’t moan?
At least one of your options is going to be a potential money pit
Trouble with that Merc is it seems too nice to ruin as a tip car. Also just double check your local tip rules, a few are a bit funny about pick-ups.
How about a Mondeo?

VW Sharan/ Ford Galaxy / Seat Alhambra
They're absolutely cavernous inside. I was given one that I hoped to use for a refurb but the rust was so far gone I sold it as spares/repair but it was huge inside.
I'm currently contemplating a Berlingo, but it's nowhere near as big. Most stuff is delivered nowadays though so I'd only use it to get timber and small bits.

Biggest car you can get in your budget is a Chrysler Grand Voyager.
Nice slidey side door for easy loading.
Take all the back seats out and you have almost a decent sized van.
TBH you are best going Ultra-shedding.
I would get the cheapest car you can get of decent size. If it breaks, scrap and replace, treat it as a pure consumable.

Avensis estate. Buy ia petrol one for 1k or less and it won't break down. Sell it or throw it away when you're done. I renovated a house and had one at the time and did the job perfectly. Traded it in with the brake pads worn down to the metal for a few hundred quid. Buy something nice or with character once your house is sorted.
