Special car for £20k - ideas please
Discussion
Hi PHs - looking to spend £20k on something with presence. This is a treat for me so want something special and a class apart from the usual 5 series or E class.
Needs to be ULEZ compliant, suitable for a daily driver and 4 doors. Basically, something to put a smile on my face every day.
Thinking of cars like the Maserati Quattroporte, BMW 6 Series GC or Mercedes CLS. Would have loved a Porsche Panamera but doesn’t look like I can get one that is ULEZ compliant for the budget and afraid that the Porsche will depreciate like a tank once all of these ULEZs are implemented across the country.
All thoughts welcome.

A 6 GC and Merc’ CLS or Porsche Panamera are not special cars. Unless you are talking M6 / AMG?
I’ve no idea what makes something ULEZ compliant nor what ULEZ is, and I don’t think you need to worry about it hitting the rest of the country, not everyone lives in or near a city.
A QP is a special car, this is a latter 4.7 GT sport (https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202006210362205).
Your budget gets you in to a Jaguar XJ R (supercharged 5.0 V8).
It also gets you into an early Bentley Arnage / Continental Flying Spur.

I suppose it's all relative depending on a person's budget / lifestyle. I agree that a CLS or a 6 Series might not be super special but the Panamera would be special for me. My only concern with the Panamera is that it might become a millstone around my neck in a couple of years as ULEZ type arrangements are extended out through the country. I want something that will do 30mpg or above and is reasonably practical. So Bentleys and supercharged 5L cars are (sadly) out. I’ve no idea what makes something ULEZ compliant nor what ULEZ is, and I don’t think you need to worry about it hitting the rest of the country, not everyone lives in or near a city.

The narrative will not get 30 mpg, unless you are talking about the hideous new shape diesel?
Are you thinking about getting a diesel? What’s your annual mileage, I assume low as you live In a ULEZ?
Again, don’t worry about ULEZ it’s a non issue, I don’t think I’ve ever drove into a city (other than Chester) in 12 years, bar whilst working.

If the ULEZ (it'll depend on who wins the next Mayoral election) extension goes ahead then it could be an issue at the same time if you buy a more desirable model then it's slower depreciation will help with the extra fuel costs.
With that in mind if you can live 26-29 real world mpg along with sensible tax then these are where I'd be looking.

Diesel wise I'd be going for a Panamera but it'll involve a budget stretch:

Thanks ZX! I’d love the Panamera but there aren’t many options in my budget. In your opinion, what’s the best looking out of the Merc CLS, BMW 6 Series and Audi A7?With that in mind if you can live 26-29 real world mpg along with sensible tax then these are where I'd be looking.

It's pretty much in the order that you listed CLS/6 GC/A7 in terms of looks but I'd take the XJ over all 3, I forgot that you can get the XJ in 3.0 supercharged V6 form:

It doesn't really matter where you have or havent driven as the car isn't for you.Are you thinking about getting a diesel? What’s your annual mileage, I assume low as you live In a ULEZ?
