I wanna give a bit of background info so it answers why I’m going this route.

So i did a mistake that some people do and applied for finance after finishing university to try to get my dream car a mustang GT for around £26k with £17k deposit. Got rejected from two different companies and now I’ve planned to get a temporary car for 1/2 years to save up the rest of the money and just get one outright.

My current car isn’t worth keeping anymore as MOT is coming up and the last MOT had major advisories.
Since its a temporary car i want it to depreciate as little as possible so definitely something used and cheap to insure for a 22 yro.
I’ve looked at 218i, Abarth 595 and some other more boring choices like VW Polo or DS3. Thing is I don’t want the car to be older than 4 years old and put me under garage bills.
I would want the car to have 4 seats as i drive around with 4 people occasionally. Any ideas?

You don't want a car to depreciate much - but you want a car less than 4 years old? You can't have both.

Unless you have significant income for a 22 year old - and your posts suggests not - spending £13k on any car - let alone a "temporary" car - sounds like madness.

It would make much more sense to buy something like a Fiesta for a few thousand at most. Minimal depreciation left, and it will cost very little to run. The idea that cars will cost a fortune to run and break all the time because they're over 4 years old is wrong. You just need to make sure you buy a decent well looked after example.

+1

FWIW I've only owned 1 car that was <4 years old and I got rid of it after 8 months to buy something older. My current daily is 15 years old and my fun car is 26.

Forget about the less than 4 years old criteria and buy something cheap but fun like a Clio Sport, if you buy one well maintained and at the right price you will likely get your money back in a couple of years or at least not lose much, I'm thinking Clio 182 or 197

I said not depreciate much I didn’t say not at all? Between a BMW and Citroen the Citroen would obviously depreciate more.
Thanks for the suggestion but i have owned a cheap Mito for 5 years now and i was looking to get a better car for a change and better driving experience, so a few thousand pound ford is not that.

I didn't say not at all either. But a less than 4 year old car will depreciate "much". I'd also suggest that a less than 4 year old BMW will depreciate more in absolute money than a 4 year old Citroen - which was much cheaper to buy in the first place.

However - since you're clearly not planning to listen to anybody, good luck finding your less than 4 year old car that doesn't depreciate much.

Yeah.

Spend £5k on a decent hot hatch (1*2/197 or CTR), enjoy it while you save for the Mustang. You won't lose money on those and if you buy the right one it shouldn't cost you loads to maintain. They're fking fun as well.

....or save that money for when you want to buy a house (typical PH answer)

Toyota GT86 seem to hold their value once the initial depreciation is done.

By one of those for £10k, it'll be amusing to drive (as long as you don't expect to out drag a 320d from the lights) and you might even want to keep hold of it for more than a couple of years.

Beggars can’t be choosers I’m afraid. That sort of money won’t buy a 4 year old car that’s stopped depreciating heavily. Used to be a rule of thumb any 3 year old car has typically lost 50% its original value so < 30k new which is Ford Focus money these days.

If you want something fun and a bit different for that sort of money you could look at a Monaro. 13k should get you a nice one and if you look after it, it won’t depreciate at all. Newest ones were built in 2005 so almost as old as you.

As others have said, a 2k Fiesta will probably lose you £500 in the time it takes you to save up.

That is a good shout as well as a mx5. But the mx5 doesn’t have the back seats
Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions mate will look into those. Some people don’t understand that i have done the basic decision makings and all I’m asking for is just some help on picking some models for comparison. I’m not intending to buy a house or sell the car expecting profit or something. I obviously expect the usual depreciation when selling but just don’t want it to be over the top

If you need the back seats for anyone over 10 years old, I'm afraid the GT86 is out too. It may have back seats, but they're next to useless.

Which car do you want most?

A £13k car now, or the dream car soon?
