My aging 2008 SAAB 9-5 Aero wagon is getting to the point where it really needs money spent on the crusty back arches which given its age and mileage would be likely double the value of the car to sort. It's been a reliable old family bus for the last 4 years and turned out to be a great buy back then for £2300.

But I'm bored of it and its worn out in many ways mainly cosmetic. Whilst looking for its replacement I started thinking about a BMW 5 GT, a good friend has a 2019 BMW 6 GT and whilst not exactly a pretty car the interior is a nice place to be and it drives well, the older 5 GT is in my budget and also looks to be well spec'd if I was to go for a 530D M Sport.

Budget is approximately £16K and I intend to own it rather than go down the PCP \ HP \ Lease route again, ideally as new as possible and sub 50K miles so we can run it for around 10 years as the family wagon. Preference is for the diesel rather than petrol as I'm tired of 20-22 MPG from the saab and the type of use it will see the DPF won't be a problem.

The big questions are, are they fairly reliable? Is the boot really big enough in comparison to what we have now?

I'd be interested in the views of others as I'm currently in the market for a family car. Currently looking at a VW Passat or 5 Series Estate.

I just want a reliable motorway muncher that's comfortable and has a bit of oomph

I looked at these a few years ago. In the end I purchased an E class estate, but that is another story.
I found the interior of the 5GT to be more spacious than the 5 touring and it seemed to have a higher quality feel, but I couldn't put my finger on why (it may have just been the spec of the ones I tried). The boot on the GT was acceptable but not as useful as the 5 touring load area (the 5 touring isn't endowed with the largest load area anyway).
Driving them I found the GT more refined (quieter and rode more smoothly) but the extra weight was noticeable both in terms of acceleration and cornering. In isolation the GT would be fine but a back to back test drive with a touring showed up the downside to the extra mass.

If I had gone ahead with a BMW purchase it would probably have been the GT, (especially as I found them more likely to have the V8 petrol engines)

I know its base on a 7 series chassis so that would explain the refinement, as it will mainly be used daily by the wife for commuting and ferrying the kids around comfort, space and equipment levels is most important, I would prefer the 3.0D rather than the 2.0D but if it comes to a choice either will be fine as long as its the auto, neither myself or the wife want a manual for the family car. I have a manual in my Abarth 595 for when I need a little fun.
