So for the last couple of years iv not really had a ‘drivers’ car or done any track days (used to be a regular before other areas of life took over) but now on the hunt for something again. Most probably be next year now ready for next summer but I’m also torn on what route to take.
I want something track suitable and a nice sunny day/road trip (NC500 etc) type car. For track caterham always seem to be the highest recommended and iv always wanted one, and since a child iv loved TVR, and have zero experience with either!
Now one option I was looking at 620r for track and either a Tuscan or tamora for sunny road fun. I have and estate as a daily so towing the caterham plus it’s stuff will be my most likely route to track days.
Plus sides caterham will be brilliant on track (I’m assuming) tvr offering more comfort/practicality for road trips but still exciting.
Downsides two cars to run/store/ maintain. TVR maybe not the most reliable of options! Possible faff of towing.
Or combine the two with an exige/something similar.
Plus sides one car is easier than two maintenance wise.
Downsides maybe slightly compromised for the track and road compared to the other two with their separate merits.
Or different options completely!

Is a Cayman similar to an elise/vx220? Really? I've driven both and the lack of mass in one of them is very noticeable. I know someone that had a similar conundrum. They wanted a track focused, drivers car and something a bit special of the weekend and if i remember he had an e92 v8 and i cant remember what else. But....the point is. He sold both and went to one car that did both and then a simple daily on the side. The car he chose was a Cayman GT4. On a par, price wise, with the Caterham 620R in the used market, i've seen them for 60-70k.
Its a brilliant machine. A very very good drivers car and also a bit special i think. I think they always look fantastic and they sound sublime, a real occasion to drive one as well.

very bad choice imo. For uk tracks op needs the Caterham and a w/end car. op doesn't need to compromise, others do, fair enough. GT4 is for Silverstone and the Ring.i have been in both cars btw.

Some good replies there cheers, the GT4 I do like after seeing one at oulton park on my last track day a few years ago it looked stunning and was doing a good pace all day! But ideally wanted some open top motoring as never had a convertible before hence the TVR. 718 boxter gts (in viper green) has been on my radar for sure, possible the best for the weekend road trip but also most of my budget so would have to be a combined track and weekend job and think I prefer the exige. If I went exige Cup I believe you can get a soft top conversion kit. Whatever route I take will be highly unlikely be going brand new and looking through the classifieds something like these are tempting me,

As for the bikes, I used to ride a lot still do some dirt bike every now and then and have quite a few mates who do bike track days/racing (one working his way up for the IOM) but I just don’t trust myself on one tbh I know il push just to far which in a car is usually catchable on a bike il be highsiding my way towards a broken spine!

Fair enough, if you're mate gets to do some Road Racing (Cookstown NW200 UGP IOM) then let me know as we do the whole Irish/ITRR championship rounds.
High side are rare these days but nothing hurts more than when you have to open up your wallet to repair them

Most of them have cheap track bikes but the one who races must spend a small fortune on bikes/parts/rebuilds I’m sure he’s won the lottery on the sly! He was at oulton yesterday had the chain snap and put a whole in something causing oil to spill on exhaust and a small fire so no doubt another hefty bill! I suppose that’s just a bit of luck and could happen with any car just as easy.
