Suggestions anyone...?

It's come time to replace the daily driver and I wondered if one or two of you might like to add your two penny's worth?


Nothing older than a 2016 car, nothing with more than 40k on the clock.

Solid and reliable a must, but here's the deal breaker REALLY has to be a 60+ MPG car.

The budget is limited to 7k or thereabouts.

Nissan leaf .....

your going to struggle with a true 60mpg car. I'd probably go with a Focus 1.5tdci.

Sorry to burst your bubble but no car gets a true 60mpg unless cruising on the motorway at 55mph.

If your looking at a relatively new car that will likely be out of warranty why are you so concerned with the mpg? Dont max yourself out on a car to then have to drive ridiculously slow and careful, youll pay more in depreciation on a 66 reg than you will save in mpg buying a bit of an older car.

Technically, solid and reliable would indicate a Japanese car, so the Suzuki Celerio. But personally I've had my fill of driving cars with a 1.0 engine when I had my L plates and with the odd hire car, I really wouldn't daily something that gutless. Conversely, a good turbodiesel with 90 or 100hp makes a very pleasant daily in a light-ish car.

The C4 has some character and gets good reviews, so I'd probably head for that.

If you need the 60+mpg then I'd go for a diesel just for the extra torque because although you can get petrols that do the job they have to be worked a bit harder.

Have you done the sums as to why this is critical? There is a degree of offest?

(I suppose if you are driving 200,000 miles a year it matters )

@ 30,000 miles per annum the difference between 50 & 60 mpg is £500. I doubt that's a deal beaker

Erm, more info needed and I don’t mean the mpg!

Back to op, how many and what sort of miles are you actually doing. The fiesta is a fantastic car, but they are a bit snug for long journeys. I would be looking at focus size.

Actually I've already got a Leaf, it's that which I'm moving on from.

I had an Ecomotive Ibiza previously, that did do 61 to the gallon. I don't fancy another though, something differnt

I was thinking about a supermini and according to Honest John they're is a few that do return a genuine 60 mpg. Sadly I'm thinking a little 1.0 litre engine that most seem to incorporate isn't that well suited for a yearly mileage of 17 k or so

It required a light foot that's for sure but my Ibiza Ecomotive did return 60 - 62 mpg of combined urban and extra urban...though the lying bastaards that VW are (along with many others) did say the combined figure was 80 mpg!!!

Thanks for the list there I've had a couple of Renaults and a Peugeot, I liked em' but the build quality and reliabilty could've been a bit better.

I've owned 2 cars that would do a true 60+ mpg in mixed driving:

Fiat Panda diesel. At 14 years old, with 120k miles on the clock, it would still get 70+mpg (brim to brim) on shortish local journeys.

2016 Skoda Citigo 60bhp. Same journeys, averaged a shade over 60mpg (brim to brim). Much nicer to drive than the sheddy Panda.

My current small car, a Kia Picanto GT-Line S turbo, is averaging 55mpg. A lot more fun, as it's a fair bit quicker than the other 2.
