Family car.. Jeep grand Cherokee Vs mercedes m class

Having looked around at 2015 age it looks like you can pickup a good example of jeep for £18k and the Mercedes in 350 flavour for ~£20k

The Mercedes is perhaps the better car although the jeep is loaded with features that are hard to find on the Merc (air suspension/dab/adaptive cruise control)

What do people think?

Definitely test drive on the motorway before you buy. Check tyre pressures first.

The jeep in Overland flavour does seem to be the most common spec and also has pretty much everything. I understand it's a heavier car and not quite as punchy as the Mercedes but options wise it's way past the Merc

Is there a view on reliability? Jeep never seems near the top of that list

The 3.0d has proved itself to be reliable, I think the dealers reaction & communication (or lack there of) work against them (a bit like Alfa dealers) so I'd say find a good indy & you'll be fine also trans fluid changes every 40-50k helps keep things running.
