For an occasional 7-seater (5 + 2 small seats) that is 4.7m long or less, hence on the smaller side, what would you recommend as new or used car that has modern technology like Carplay, adaptive crusie control, 360 degree camera and latest safety technology?
There seems plenty of cars on the large luxury SUV end but shorter ones that occasionally can transport multiple kids in the back seem mostly more dated MPVs and or less fun to drive.

I hired a "BMW" 2-series Active Tourer recently that would fit your bill, I think. 220i so had 2.0T auto, decently quick - worth a look.

I had the same requirements and ended up going with the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer - which works as a 5+2. The seats in the back are on the smaller side, for kids or short adults and if that's ok - then it works brilliantly. The quality is a cut above the usual MPVs in this category.

I'm due to get mine in October on a lease deal - and there are some cracking deals that do pop up from time to time (as cracking as they can be, given the incredible demand and limited supply at this time!)

The Active Tourer only comes with 5 seats, its the Gran Tourer that has the 2 extra seats in the third row as standard.

Disco Sport is 4.6m long and new ones are full of tech, it's quite wide though.

Thanks thumbup The car I had was the Gran Tourer then, since it had the 7 seats. I'd completely overlooked the fact that there are two different lengths of this car with different names, I thought it was just one body style! Learn something new every day,...

Not easy finding a 2 GT with all the toys. Not many of them seem to have adaptive cruise.

Thank you for those ideas. I forgot to mention I am looking for automatic and I use it more on weekends and do not drive much overall, hence a petrol may be more useful. There are a few cars in the list which match my criteria.

Autotrader: How did you most efficiently search for those cars with those tech specs on autotrader? I cannot search there for many features like carplay, camera, adaptive cruise control, etc. i can put a keyword in the comment search box on autotrader but for that the spelling has to match (and many features have a different name with each model). so unless I know the trims of a model (which you seem to do since you suggested all those trims with the latest tech features I mentioned, pretty cool), i find lots of cars without the features. maybe I am using autotrader not that efficiently?

how would you compare the latest Discovery Sport or the Mercedes GLB with those cars?

thank you for your time and for helping me with those ideas.

All of the cars I've listed above can be had in auto form.

The Citroen Berlingo MPV / Peugeot partner MPV / Vauxhall combo MPV all come in a medium (M) and XL wheel base with 7 seats.

The top of the range 7 seater M Peugeot Partner has a lot of tech and unlike the cramped rear seats of a 2 series tourer, the back 2 seats are full size for adults.

The back 2 seats of a 2 series tourer are practically unusable once you add a child’s car seat, a 6 year old barely fits in.

Mercedes Benz GLB should fit the bill perfectly
