Proper long distance petrol cruisers with big fuel tanks

Have been wrangling over this topic for a while as I look for barges, and thought it might make for an interesting Shed-style topic

Has anyone owned/driven a petrol car , over 6 cylinders , with a proper big fuel tank that allows 650+ miles on a single tank?

I looked at L322 Range Rovers for a while (see previous posts) and even though the fuel tank is 100 litres, that V8 won't be getting me much over 400 mile to a tank I presume.

Then the fewer cylinders I hunt for, the smaller the fuel tanks - would a 60 litre fuel tank married to a straight six give me this magical range? I'm not sure.

Yes I know with all cars I could just refuel, but the nature of my journeys mean I'd quite like the option of diesel-style range without having to stop somewhere prominent.

Has anyone owned anything that got close to, on or exceeded this range? Are there some six or eight cylinder diesels with big tanks that I should consider instead?

...P.S if anyone owns a 320d and gets that kind of range, I'm happy for you. I really am. I'm just not in the market for that car.

Our E-Class has the (non optional) 80l tank. There’s no way it’ll do 600 miles however.

So a 6+ cylinder petrol with a 75 litre tank would have to do more than 40mpg on a run to get 650m. Or a 60 litre tank needs 48mpg? I doubt it's doable because to have a 75 litre tank you're looking at a big and therefore heavy car.

If you're going to get close, presumably you're looking at the 525 kind of space - ie. the lowest powered 6cyl in a model with decent sized tanks. Getting a smaller bodied 6 cyl near to 50 mpg seems less plausible.

Apparently the BMW Active Hybrid 5 is your car. I saw one in Tescos in Mottram once. It may not still be there.

If you can find one, and are prepared to slipstream trucks, you could probably get 650 (juuuust) out of a BMW E65 730i.

88l tank and approx. 37mpg. (claimed).

I can get a genuine 29/30mpg slipstreaming in my 760, so it doesn’t feel too unbelievable - but it’s as boring as hell - a genuine 23/24 at 75 is more than good enough!

Jaguar X350 V6 petrol - 85 litre tank, 35mpg easily achievable on a long run at a steady 70 (best I've had is an indicated 37) which gives a range of 651 miles.

Clarkson did a challenge with the diesel version years ago and managed almost 1,000 miles on a tankfull IIRC.

E Class diesels come with big fuel tanks that should see you clear your number, I used to see a proper 640+ out of my CLK320cdi (it was mapped though) on a run. So the E Class with the bigger tank will do it with ease.

What about a Porsche Panamera V8 hybrid? I don’t know what their consumption will be at motorway speed but their emission value is low and a 80l fuel tank?

Panamera 4 E-Hybrid - 80 litre tank, petrol, 35mpg on a motorway run, 616 miles (or you could go for the diesel V8 panamera with the 90 litre tank)

You could try and hunt down an older Petrol Alpina that had the option of the 110 litre tank fitted when new.

Anything that's had an LPG conversion. They're usually dual fuel and when the LPG tank empties, you switch over to petrol

I presume there are a whole bunch of I6/V6 turbo Dervs with 80 litre tanks that will return ~40mpg on restrained cruise.

I think that my V8 R8 had something like a 95 litre tank, so there is definitely the odd small car with tanks that size.

Still no chance of managing 600 miles though, a bit over 400 was the most I managed.

Ok, it’s diesel, but A8 D4 has an 85 (I think) Litre tank. On a journey (rather than town) easily get >650 miles. And it’s a pretty pleasant place to be. And a V6.

Had a couple of them since 2013. I hate filling up and it worked well for me!
