Selling car V5C online
Discussion
Hey,
Selling my car this saturday (22nd)
Buyer has made arrangments for his insurance to start on Saturday, thats also when he will pick it up. Car will sit on my drive for next two days.
Can i do this online today and transfer to his name, or do i need to transfer on Saturday Morning and then has to tax the car same day.? He only wants to tax it on Sat.
Thanks

I don't really see any benefit to anyone in you registering the car to the new owner today?
The negatives are-
-Once ownership is transferred as he is not collecting till Saturday you should technically put it on SORN until then and if it's already on SORN you will have to do a further application for the new owner.
- What if the new owner changes his mind before now and Saturday or something else happens? You would have added an additional owner to the V5 for no reason if you have to resell it again.
Theres probably other reasons not to I can't think of currently but ultimately the process is 5 minutes online if that when he is there with you ready to take it so may as well just wait till Saturday.

Sold my old car a few weeks back and did this online. It's the same as filling in the new keeper section on the paper form but obviously you don't need to post it. Really simple and could be done on a phone or tablet while they are there. If they provide an email address it will even send them confirmation immediately.
I wouldn't do it in advance in case something goes wrong with the sale.

The car is going to a relative, we sorted payment out etc, so no worries there,
main concern is this online, so if i transfer on Saturday morning I assume the system will untax it for me and he can tax it online at the same time.. thats the part I dont fully get with this being online and being quite a while since i have sold a car.
thanks

Use this link to the correct page. If you do this and then the buyer goes on to the relevant .gov.uk page to tax it, the process should be smooth.main concern is this online, so if i transfer on Saturday morning I assume the system will untax it for me and he can tax it online at the same time.. thats the part I dont fully get with this being online and being quite a while since i have sold a car.
