When I do this type of purchasing I basically go on Gumtree, Autotrader and FB Marketplace, set your budget, fuel type etc and just see what comes up, I don't think it helps to look for a particular make/model at this budget although you won't go too far wrong with a Focus as long as you check for rust.

A few months ago I picked up a relatively low mileage Mini Cooper S for under a grand and it's been great but I was lucky probably buying when there was a lockdown etc.

Funnily enough I did the same 2 years ago and also ended up with an r53 Cooper S. It's a bit small, expensive to tax and drinks petrol like it's got a 4l v8 but it's been very reliable and great fun.

Other sub £1k shed successes for me using the budget lucky dip method have been a Honda HRV which was reliable, comfortable and sold for a profit and a Citroen Xsara Picasso which again was reliable, comfortable and incredibly economical. Loved both of those more than most fancy expensive stuff I've owned.
