Currently slogging through a 60 mile each way commute, mostly motorway.

In the last 3 years I've used the following, you might spot a pattern..;

£280 Alfa 156 Sportwagon 2.4Jtd
- Managed 45k miles without any major issues before impending belt changes and rust issues made it uneconomical to hold onto.

£1150 Alfa 159 Sportwagon 2.4Jtdm
- 42k miles in so far, engine and suspension issues crop up on a near weekly basis. The list for the next MOT is pretty long so now seems to be a good time to find something a little lower maintenance.

Only real requirements are >35mpg and must have room for a mountain bike inside.

Another estate would be useful but the usual german suspects just seem so drab. Is there anything interesting out there that can handle 30k a year?

Budget ideally around £4000 - but overall cost of ownership is most important

Cheers

I'm not sure any of these are interesting but they'll handle 30k a year with ease:

Citroen C5 VTR+ these are a great pick reliable & not as popular as the 508 below so you get a better spec lower mileage car for less money

Laguna2 as long as you don't mind taking the front wheels off a hatchback is a good choice again reliability is good on these & like the C5 these come with great spec & very low miles:
