Another advice seeker: "Family" Hatchback on a 2.5k budget

Hi all,
Still reading the other posts to find further recommendations.
This month I'll be on the market for an Mk5 Golf 1.4 TSI (122PS), although the odd Megane III 2.0 Tce grabs my interest.
Not a Focus Mk2 fan (at all).

Requisites are 4.5m max length*, petrol, comfortable for two 6"2 adults on the front seat and people with legs on the back, and capable of holding itself on the motorways (my 19 Jazz couldn't)**

• The length requisite is due to living in a tricky cul de sac. Current 4.7m car without parking sensors is tricky.

• 95% of my use is urban, so I could be flexible with slower cars, if newer or in better shape.

Like I mentioned I'm focusing on the Mk5 Golf 1.4 TSI, and considering the 1.6 FSI and the rare 2.0 FSI as options.

What other cars should I consider? I need to widen my choices..

We had a Mazda 3 for 4 years and it never put a foot wrong only getting a service occasionally, we had the 1.6 petrol but it never felt under powered and was fine on motorway.

You've not mentioned budget, but I presume we're looking at £3-7k, possibly around 10 years old?

I'd add the SEAT Leon mk2 and Audi A3 8P to the list. The Golf is such a default choice that you may find you get more for your money with one of these. Beware that any of these will have been traded-in for a reason, so expect to spend a little extra once down the line if you want the car to be perfectly functional.

My fault, mentioned budget only in the title... It's around 2.5k, with some flexibility.

I would be looking at Honda Civic (05-11) model.

The 1.8 petrol is very reliable and get about 40-42mpg on average.

The Golfs T/FSI engines are known for various issues.

Other options, as mentioned by another, a Mazda 3 (petrol engine more reliable and cam chains, not belts, same as Honda Civic)

Maybe a Toyota Auris or Hyundai i30 or Kia c'eed

Whoops - yes I now see the title! At £2.5k, the Mk5 Golf alternatives from the VAG stable still work as a recommendation because of their ubiquity... but you could make a strong case also for a Focus or the other recommendations here.

The problem with kia ceed / i30 is the 1.6 petrol...it kinda puts me off a bit. Back in Brazil the i30 was available with a more than sufficient 2.0 petrol.
Same for the Auris/Corolla, but you can find some 1.8s
