MY updates after order but before build - options?

I need to ask your advice about a new car order situation I’m in.. 

In July I ordered the wife a MY20 Discovery Sport.

We paid £1000 deposit on the day, but have not signed any paperwork (not even any finance documentation - even though she has been approved?) 

The vehicle is due to be built on the 11th September, and delivered 25th September. 

At the point of order I asked the salesman about model year refreshes - he said he doubted it would be anything large and nothing to worry about.  I was specifically interested in the emissions and RDE2 qualification as it would reduce first year VED by ~£500.

I have just discovered that the MY21 refresh is significant; a lot of the options we chose are now standard, others are cheaper, and the Infotainment system has been replaced for a much better system.  Also the engine we opted for is no longer available. 

I’ve emailed the dealer to ask what his views are on our situation, but I’m not expecting much of a response short of ‘spec is locked - tough!’ 

Does anyone have any suggestions for where we stand?

Would we have grounds to cancel? Request that the specification is updated to MY21?  The build is apparently ‘specification locked’?

Or are we stuck with a car on order, that is already out of date before it has been delivered - or even built?

Sorry, I should have been clearer - they have since released the MY21 cars, which have been quite significantly upgraded and oddly enough - less expensive.

New deals, updates and models are always coming out, you can always wait a bit longer and get some improvements and/or a better price. But you made a deal for a car you were happy with and agreed the price. I’d consider that my decision made and look forward to my new car.

Even better - BMW just dropped stuff off the standard spec of my car between order and delivery. Simply said, "Nope, you won't be getting that now." Cheeky fkers!

True. If I had already received the car, then yes I would just grumble for a bit and be done with it.

There were articles in the motor press about a facelift & changes back in May - an important lesson here to do your own homework and not rely on a salesperson who simply wants to sell a car.

The first question I’d be asking is when they start building MY21 - you may find they’ve already started and so you’ll actually get a MY21.

As you’ve not signed anything, it would seem you only stand to lose your deposit. Ordering a new MY21 would presumably resolve the situation (albeit likely via a different dealer group!) and if prices And standard kit has changed as you say, you’ll possibly still be quids in.

It was the 'Display Key' and they seem to have taken the M-piping off the seats - and it was such a good deal it wasn't enough to cancel over.

Manufacturers used to do model changeovers in summer shutdown but no idea how that's working this year. I tried to look it up and it looks like OP's car might be right on the cusp - press suggestions are deliveries from October.

I suppose it's likely the OP got a good deal on the current order and it'll take a while for pricing to settle on the MY2021 especilly if the changes are reasonably significant.

I think I would be looking at is it worth while to write off the deposit and reorder elsewhere in the worst case scenario and have that in my back pocket as a back up if the dealership does refuse to assist.

JLR have usually started the new build year after the summer shutdown starting 1st September so a September build would usually be the new spec. Covid may have affected this as they no doubt have lots of old bits like engines that have been discontinued to still be built. Worth chasing the dealer to find out exactly what you will get and if it really will save you £500 on VED consider if the deposit might just be worth losing?
