hot hatch - £4k
Discussion
Hi all,
so we're now thinking a hatch would tick our boxes pretty well.
so, fire away some suggestions
ideally it needs to be more fuel efficient than an XC60 D4, other than that, 5 doors and fun to drive.
dealer only, I want warranty and some piece of mind.
My current options:
it's a shame he's so far away as this dealer seems to have a few possibilities - but 0 feedback and i'd have to have it delivered without seeing it EEK!
Option 1

Option 2

any thoughts?

see i'm not tooooo fussed about the economy, just a "be nice"
The volvo is a bit of a tank, and when the wife goes back to work next year she'll possibly end up using the smaller car as I work from home and can then be left with the Volvo with kids seats and dog cage.
Ideally, i'll just get another car seat for the laddo and not take the dog in it unless an emergency

this one's twenty minutes away from a meeting i've got on Thursday so could actually go look
only concern there is "tuned" might make insurance a bit of a pig

Nothing to do with the mods but it's a very low spec one and quite strong money so I would avoid. Thoughts?

I think you need to take a step back, do some research on potential next car(s). All of these cars are now getting quite old, and finding out weak points, potential failures, cambelt intervals etc could literally save you thousands.
Many GTI's, ST's and similar will have been modified in their past, so it's always worth checking the history of the car. I'm not trying turn you away from these, it's more so you can understand what you'll be getting yourself into.
Good luck! Hope you find a cracking motor

'As the buyer of one of our vehicles you are committing yourself to a trade sale meaning you are buying a vehicle on the terms and you have adequate knowledge for purchasing a vehicle for the car trade, you do not need to be a member of BINCA in order to buy from us but we do like to stress that all vehicles must be bought based on your own opinion. Wouldn't buy from them with someone else's money TBH

Oh I agree with your thoughts, I don't want to be buying into a cash pit. This car needs to last me about 18 months, after that it'll be getting swapped.
so I want 18 months of clear driving, i'll probably cover about 12,000 miles in this time.
If it'll do that, without costing the earth, i'll be more than happy.

That first GTI actually looks pretty clean on the outside and the scabby bits of trim are easily replaced (did them on my old one). I'd be wary of it being fiddled with when there are decent unmolested ones out there and some of the tat attached to it is questionable (Chinese ebay centre arm rest for example), its a mega low spec one and I believe the early 2005 cars are prone to problems whereas the 2006+ ones aren't? Best read a buyers guide.
FWIW I bought my 2006 GTI about 4 years ago for £4000. It had ~115k miles on it but it had 1 previous owner, full VW service history (even down to wiper blades being replace by VW) and a decent spec (sunroof, heated cream leather, DSG, MFSW with paddles, 18" Monzas, highline dash, arm rest etc). Only thing it was lacking really were xenons. Was a lovely car and apart from routine servicing didn't cost much to run.
Apart from routine servicing, things to check for are cam followers being done (theyre a cheap and easy thing to do yourself though) and rusty wings (as per that thing at BINCA above). Rusty wings a well known and documented mk5 issue but new wings can be picked up cheap and painted.

ok that's fair, it's really just a case of it being convenient to go look at.

I do quite like this a3, I like having 4wd so quattro is nice, and a chip in there is an easy way to outdo a Focus ST.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2009-Audi-A3-2-0-TDI-5d...
this is my sensible option, it's closer to where I live and more economical....but bloody dull AF i'd imagine.
