Cambelt change required to validate warranty?

Hi there new to the forum.

I have just put down a deposit on a 2008 Alfa Romeo Brera 2.4jdtm with 73k miles on the clock and includes a service, full MOT and six months comprehensive warranty.

Looking through the service history the cambelt and water pump were done at 55k however this was in 2013. Stupidly I didn't come with the knowledge of the interval times so asked to dealer who thought it was every 10 years?! I now know it should be every 5 years at the most so it is already 2 years overdue.

My question is am I within my right to go back and ask that the service includes a cambelt (and water pump) change? I'm guessing the warranty may be void anyway if it hasn't been done at the scheduled interval?

Any advice would be appreciated thankyou!!

Yes go back & point out that the cambelt service is two years overdue & you'd like it included in the service.

Definitely. It's one thing them giving you the wrong information if it was due in the near future but another thing entirely if they've given you the wrong information and it's 2 years overdue already.

Assuming the manufacturer service schedule specifies for the cambelt to be changed every five years, then for them to service the car they will have to change the cambelt - otherwise they wouldn't be doing the 'service' as defined by the manufacturer. So yeah, I'd ring up and ask for the guy who told you ten years, and let him know that you checked and it needs doing every five years, so will be due as part of the service they are going to do, and just ask them to confirm that they'll do it.

I expect they will do it for you, otherwise if the belt snaps when you're driving home I think it would end up costing them more money. But worth making sure it's done.

Thanks for all the comments. Spoke to him today to voice my concern, didn't really say much other than he will ring Alfa to confirm the change intervals and that he'll call me back, so I shall wait and hear.

I had a 2007 2.2 JTS and I'm pretty sure that was cam chain. I know because one of the known issues was that the chain would stretch slightly and cause engine check light - on average at about 50k miles I believe. (Mine was about that but didn't have the problem in my ownership).

Surprised the diesel is a belt.
