Family SUV for around 6k

Afternoon,

Partner likes the idea on an suv for herself and the children!

Got two younger children in car seats and it needs to have a half decent size boot for the pram etc.

Looking at something along the lines of Ford Kuga, Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan.

Can be a bit flexible with the budget and probably after a manual.

What do you recommend looking at and which ones to be avoided?

With that sort of money, I'd have thought Ford and Vauxhall are the safest bet unless you're willing to go older and/or higher mileage. For Ford that is the Kuga (as you say) and for Vauxhall the Mokka. Neither are quite my cup of tea but I'd personally prefer the Ford.

Vauxhall Mokka are awful for interior space so don't go for that, my father in law is on his 3rd currently, he insists on buying the things but for interior space they are pretty bad, with child seats in the back and occupied the front seats have to be pretty far forward and the boot is very small.

RAV 4 to suit your budget would be my suggestion. I'm a big fan, and what with it being a Toyota you can expect high reliability.

Agree with the above, been quite impressed with the SMax, and I'd say with 7 seats, arguably more practical than a Kuga. Why the want for an SUV? An SMax will get just as far as a Kuga down a muddy track..

Galaxy is very similar, so worth a look also.

I bought a high spec Tiguan for 9K as my first SUV when my youngest arrived. It was 6 years old on 60k miles. I’m a huge VAG fan so seemed the right choice. It was reliable and fitted us all in but seemed extremely expensive to maintain. I put 30k on it in 3 years and lost £5k in devaluation and spent £3.5k in maintenance. By the time I sold it it needed a further £2k spending on it. I’d lost a lot of love for it and now ordered a Troc on lease. I’m done with owning for the time

For that sort of car I would strongly suggest an auto, one less thing to worry about while the kids are kicking off in the back.... Personally I wouldn't buy a manual again, modern autos are excellent

Nissan X-Trail springs to mind. (The older-shape square ones, not the newer roundy one.) They're agreeably chunky, a good size for a family and there's quite a lot of them around your price point.

Honda CR-V or Rav 4 would be my choices or maybe an XC60.

Cheers for all the feed back so far! I will have a good read through later and have a look at the links.

Think a 7 seater would be more practical and handy if any other family members were coming out with us etc. Also would have a good size boot when the rear seats aren't in use.

She’s always liked Tourans, but I assume given the choice you lot would recommend an Smax over a Touran?
