Private Plate advice

Hi people
A few days ago I bought a used car from a BMW main dealer which I collected with the previous owners private plate still on it as the new logbook that had been applied for was delayed due to the current situation, the dealer said I could drive the car with this plate displayed until the new logbook arrives at my house (with my name on it and the car being back on its original plate) and then I can assign my own private plate and make the required change.
Is this right as it doesn’t seem so ? When I now check with gov.uk the old private plate no longer links to the car but if I use the age related plate it does, my assumption is I now need to display the age related plate and change my insurance etc. and then change again to my private plate when the logbook arrives (which will of course cost a small fortune in admin fees !!)
Am I reading this right or is the dealer correct and there is a ‘grace’ period whilst the swapping of logbooks takes place ?

If DVLA think the original age related VRM is assigned to the car, then you have to bung that plate on. Tell the dealer to make up a set for you, as it's their delay causing you not to have the V5. When it arrives, assign your plate and fit the number plate. Bung the age related ones in the garage.
When you are insuring it, tell the nice insurer people that you will be putting private plates on, and they should waive the admin fee for that. There is no fee for putting your plates on, as you paid that when you put them on retention. Tara, no admin fees , and the dealer pays for the age related actual plates.
