I’m looking at Volvo S60. It’s around 6 months old and on at £25k.

I’m told there is little margin to play with as it’s already been reduced by £1k.

Are there any suggestions on what I get in the bargain? For me I would love to have the 2 years of manufacture warranty extended to 3 or 4.

Alternatively do I ask for service cover or more money off?

I’ve not bought a car for while so input would be great. It would be a “cash” purchase.

What is your reasoning for extra discount or bits thrown in (which of course they aren't free to the dealer so they have to still be factored into any margin in the car)?

Purely based on a want from me. The additional warranty is really a piece of mind given I’ve never had a Volvo before.

Surely that’s obvs you make your “money” on buying at the right price be it cars watches houses equity whatever. Buying in price is key.

Get a discount then old out yer h’and

Ok so the car is priced correctly then based on what else is out there, if you "want" an extended warranty for peace of mind then I suggest you pay for it yourself.

Dealers are busy with used cars, used car stock is hard to replace and to replace said stock is becoming more expensive for the dealer, a dealer does not need to reduce a car or throw bits in, if it is prime stock.

Check you have (or can have insurance in place quickly). Ask about the extra warranty cover, say you want peace of mind. They may quote a price. Say you know Volvos are reliable (they are not especially so), you could argue that after 2 years without claim nothing should go wrong that would burden them between 2 and 4 years old. Try and work on something that offers a lot to you, but is cheap for them.

Do what my wife did.

Put her coat on and started walking out the door. We had been there nearly 2 hours with test drive.

It either works or it doesn't, but her argument was that she had 3 other similar cars to view that were further away, with a better spec but cheaper.
For me it would have meant another hour each way to view any one of them. Unfortunately all in different directions.
Lucky for me, the cost of a 3 month or a 12 month warranty for a main dealer isn't particularly expensive, and that was the final sticking point. And the spec and colour was very unfavourable to most people. To my wife it had everything she wanted except being piss green. Which a year later she says she likes.

I've tried this a few times and it's never worked for me!

In my experience if they say they won't move in price, then they probably won't. You might get warranty or a service or something thrown in though.
Is the car fairly priced? Do you want it? If it's not fairly priced then I think it's reasonable to say so and barter. If it is fairly priced then I think asking for something different to cold hard cash is the way to go.

By the way if this is a main dealer don't expect "cash" to make any difference, they would much prefer to sell you the finance...

We were close to a deal, but she wanted 12 months warranty thrown in. And they wanted to charge £450 for it. On a 40k mile 1.6 Astra ?
I reckon they could get it for £120, but her point was that if the car is as good as you say, back it up with a Warranty.

Ultimately the simple answer is: Ask for it.

Say ‘John, I really want to buy the car and happy to do so at your price of £XXX but I need the extended warranty included at the price, if you can do that we’ve got a deal’

That’s pretty much it. If they want the deal/can do the deal then they’ll do it. If they can’t/won’t then they won’t. It’s your decision if you want to continue without the warranty.

Negation isn’t rocket science, but you need to have a goal of what you actually want to achieve form the outset.

It’s very rare that someone says to me ‘I’ll absolutely buy if you do X or Y (when reasonable rather than £3000 off a £6000 car etc) and I haven’t shaken their hand. Ask, be prepared for a no and have a decision pre planned based on the no.

No disrespect but that is a very naive view, an extended warranty has a fixed cost attached; 0 claims or 3 claims, it still costs the dealer the same; the cost of the extended warranty, the dealer won't themselves be underwriting any warranty claims.
