Bought a car and dealer drives it for 2,000 miles!

I have bought a Range Rover Vogue, 9 months old with 2,782 miles - I paid for it ten days ago and the dealer has been working to get it from their location in Birmingham to their location in Slough for me to pick it up. As Mrs Windsorphil was arranging the update for the insurance they mentioned the mileage was now 4,700!

The warranty documentation states mileage is at 2782 - I'm just back from a business trip and am due to pick it up tomorrow - I'm not happy at all - what should I do?

Id expect them to pay for the next service. Or get the cash from them to cover it before collection. The cheek of it!!

Did they check it only had 2700 miles on it?

Our demonstrators are only checked when they’re taken off fleet, sounds like a cockup by someone.

I can’t see the extra miles making much difference to the value (a bit but not much!) so you need to decide if you still want to buy it.

Extra miles makes about £700 difference on the retail on what I presume is around a £70k car, so 1% of the value.

If it isn't a mistake I would kick up a stink....That's a huge difference....by percentage.

I didn't see a picture with the mileage, but all the paperwork has the lower mileage consistently through it, including the warranty validation certificate which was sent to me today.

I think at least a free service sounds like the sensible thing.

I am shocked that 2000 miles would make any difference to the value when comparing 2 like for like cars but I would be annoyed if I thought I had bought it at 2 something and got 4 something out of principle...I too expect it is an admin error.

2000 miles over ten days, 200 miles a day, doesn't sound feasible really? unless someones driven it the length of the country for a holiday...twice

I bought an ex demo mx-5 18 months ago and the advert said it had 500 miles on the clock. Think admin had just stuck down 500 miles and nobody had checked. Drove from Glasgow to Liverpool to collect the car. Turned out to have 1,900 miles on it. They just explained that it’s an ex demo and nobody really knows the mileage on them. I got a full tank of fuel chucked in and off I went. I was slightly annoyed but got over it by the time I’d arrived back in Glasgow. I don’t think they were trying to pull a fast one, just an admin error.

That sounds like you agree the OP should be aggrieved. 2000miles is going to be many hundreds of pounds in depreciation.

But I look at both sides of the coins, is £700 a lot of money? To some maybe, is it a lot of money in comparison to the value of the car and the colossal amount of money it will lose over the next 3/4 years.... absolutely not.

OP is on the right tack, ask for a free service and a tank of fuel and get on with it.

Yup, my one was over £105k new, I bought 2 yrs old for £60k

It would depreciate that fast though regardless of miles, it is time too.

My friend owned 3 merc dealerships, their sales manager messed up selling an sl65amg at over £160k but took a tiny deposit, it came in to the dealer and buyer backed out, it was losing thousands per week and a lot in stocking finance too, the ditched out at around £100k about 2 months in. No miles...just time.

OP squeeze them a little to see what comes out then get a service and make sure all the warranty stuff etc reflects the correct mileage when you took possession otherwise the extra miles will be perceived as yours..........in the unlikely event of a claim on a RR.......oh.
