What car max budget 5k

A friend is looking for something more “solid” feeling than their current 07? Civic. Gonna take over the Honda’s duties as a baby wagon basically needs ISOFIX for two seats and reliable. Ideally they’d like to spend less than 5000, they told me they were looking at A3 or 1 Series but I know they can get a better car with a “lesser” badge. An estate could be good though not sure if it’d be too big but i’d suggest it. First thoughts were a Mondeo/Focus, some sort of Skoda. In Glasgow so car needs to be local

If the car is in decent shape and not at the end of its life then what is to be gained in terms of "solidity"? There might be a lot of reasons to change but that premise strikes me as questionable pending further information. They are better built cars than Audi A3s and BMW 1 series, even more so under 5000 where you are getting an older car. The fact those are being considered suggests it's more about performance and appeal than mechanical integrity which is cool but I think as a buyer they have to really nail down what the priorities are.

i have owned a 2014 volvo v40 d2 with the 1.6 diesel. it had 110k miles and i bought it for 5k exactly.
it was an amazing car for the price and spacey, mile cruncher and an all round amazing car.
mpg was always around or just above 60 and the dash was german quality with a swedish touch. was one of the beset cars i have ever owned and honestly thinking about getting another. The engine is pokey and i had a digital dash, dual climate, cruise, heated froont seats and the sound system was amazing.
honestly for the price if youre looking fora family car, you. wont find a better one for the price

I also have a 2014 Volvo V40. Build quality/solidity is as good as the 2011 Lexus IS250 I used to own.

They're great cars that many people have missed.

Hi all, sent over the above recommendations but something came up so they never got round to buying anything. Now my friend is telling me they might keep the civic as they’ve just spent money on it, and are open to buying a bigger vehicle for the kids. Still looking to spend up to £5K, they mentioned the small suv - qashqai type thing - but I suggested estates would be better. Any suggestions?

Mondeo Mk4.5 is a good option. Mine (estate 2.0 TDCI) has been ultra reliable is very quiet, comfortable, huge and decent to drive with nicely weighted steering. BIt slow (140bhp) so try and get the more powerful engines if poss. Interior is so-so quality wise would be the main negative.

I've also owned a Focus estate btw (previous model, so probably the one you're looking at). Again, decent, but obviously not as big. In estate cars Mondeo boot is bettered only by the E-Class for real world capacity. Perfect for the baby crap.

Worth adding that options like the Qashqai have far, far smaller boots than the Mondeo. On the plus side the higher and narrower body makes it easier to get kids and their chairs in and out.
