Folks,
My Volvo V70 is not long for this world I fear so now looking for a replacement. I do a 50 mile round trip to work on an awful A road so I want something reasonably sturdy and comfy. Similar or better fuel consumption to my 07 auto v70 d5 would be good.
Had initially thought about an A5 3.0d but my head has now been turned by the e350, seems a lot of car for the cash.
Looking at the lower end, so probably £6-7k/up to about 140k miles.
Anything I should bear in mind? Are they a good steer?

Love mine. The longest I’ve owned a daily, 5 years now.
Mines in Calcite White with everything bar the sunroof.
Poster above says interior is dated, I don’t agree. Okay it’s got dials, nothing wrong with those. Proper thick leather & stitching on the heated seats & wheel, no artico nonsense. Seatbelt butler, powered steering wheel, Harmon Kardon 14 speaker stereo. Basically many features you still see in a high end Mercedes. It’s the same interior of the similar age C63.
Engine is a peach. 400 pounds of torque means put your foot down at any speed and it kicks down & throws you up the road. Nice V6 creamy sound as well. It’s a fast car.
It’s not a B road blaster as it’s a big car, it’ll do ok but it gets uncomfortable throwing it around after hot hatches.
Motorway driving is effortless, & a roads the same. It would literally do 150 all day long. Ride is very good.
7g gearbox with paddles & sportshift, gearbox is good enough, I generally just leave it in Sport & change to comfort for the extra crappy roads. I’ve used the paddles & sportshift for about 5 mins in total. It is a bit ponderous.
Boot is a surprisingly good size & you can fold the rear seats down for extra room. I’ve had a road bike in there....
Problems, had an engine sensor go & air con sensor go. Other than that, servicing tyres & brakes. 30 mpg in all Real world driving which is good given the performance.

I’m struggling to find what to replace it with hence the length of ownership. An F type is next on the list, anything else I’d be disappointed with.

They're very good cars don't be temted by the 220/250's as they have the timing chains at the back of the engine which can sometimes be troublesome.
I've supplied loads of these & they're a motorway/A Road car getting one with the pano roof really lifts the cabin, also lookout for the 265bhp models.
They also really respond well to remaps, make sure the gearbox fluid has been changed every 40k if there's no evidence of this being done then knock £250-300 off to get this done, check the roof blind is moving smoothly.

I never look at dealer reviews & actually judge the car.
I bought a Skyline from Motorhub (they have pretty much the worst reputation going) the car was spot on so I bought it the process of buying was painful & only solidified why they have such a s
t reputation but the car is still running well.
So I'd say view & asses the car on it's condition along with the relevant paperwork, then go from there.

I looked at them when I got my A5 and personally preferred the Audi in terms of how it drove, the looks and the interior, nothing at all wrong with the E Coupe though just was my personal preference both great places to be.
Cheers, I was set on an A5 but really liked the look of the Mercs. Not to say I wouldn’t jump if a bargain A5 came up though, I have spent the previous month on a specialist driving course in an A8L with the 3l Diesel engine and the pace/handling was genuinely astonishing for such a lump of metal!carreauchompeur said:

It's the newer 9 speed gearbox that makes the biggest difference between the 0-60 times also a slightly smaller housing on the new car helps with spool up.The 265s came in approx end of 2011IIRC, with the straight DRLs. Possibly the first ones with stop/start but not sure on that. 620nm torque, perfectly adequate.
Quite a few internal engine differences, pistons, fuel pressure and other bits plus revised dpf regeneration parameters. Also with later 7g+ gearbox.
Panroof makes car interior lighter. SEs had leather, Sports Artico. All V6s, incl SEs, had sports suspension and steering. Sports had multi-adjustsble seats and intelligent lights as standard, options on SE. Greater harddrive storage on Comand with 265s.
Engines then detuned slightly with the facelift, which was about end of 2013, not much difference, AdBlue possibly introduced at same time. Much smoother than 4-cylinders.

Thanks for all the help guys. Picked up my new car today. Really lovely drive back and a good split between cruiser in comfort mode and absolute hooligan in sport mode...
I think I’ve done alright. This is a 2009 122k one owner car which has been more-or-less parked up for a year, so I’ll probably have to overhaul the brakes as the front callipers seem a bit sticky. Reasonable amount of history.
Loads of options including dynamic handling package, posh lights etc etc... few cosmetics to sort including wheel returb and a few stone chips, but given I paid £4500 there’s a bit of room in the budget!
