Since iv'e been out in my friends MK7 GTI Performance its got me wanting one,

I'm torn between a Golf GTI and a Cupra i don't follow German cars that mu h more JDM but of what i can understand the cupra has a Golf R turbo or a golf R engine I can't really remember.

But whats the differences between them the GTI performance and Cupra ? does the cupra have the same brakes as the performance GTI or are they like the standard GTI and whats would be a better option money wise??

Thanks

I can help a little bit as I am about 2 weeks into my lease deal with a Cupra.
The GTI, R and Cupra all use the EA888 engine. I think the biggest difference between them is the Turbo and software setup. If my memory is right the GTI Performance comes with 245hp whereas the Leon comes with 290 (figures are a bit different for earlier cars but still a similar deficit.) As far as I'm aware the brakes are the same as the ones on the GTI Performance but happy to be corrected on that.

I can't remember what the standard spec is like on the golf anymore but the spec on the Cupra is pretty good. You get the diff (which it probably shares with the GTI Performance) and adaptive suspension along with a few comforts like the virtual dash. I've sat in a few Golf GTI's and R's and I prefer the Cupra interior but that will be personal preference. I'd imagine the Golf would hold its value a bit better but I think you get more for your money with a Leon. Neither car is a bad choice.

I've never driven a GTI Performance but I would imagine its very similar in feel to the Cupra. I'm not sure how much you would notice the ~45hp difference. Let me know if you have any questions about the Cupra smile

I've had both and can say I enjoyed my time with them.

Most of the under the hood stuff is the same. Same engine (though the Cupra has some physical and software differences), same diff, same brakes. You get the idea.

The performance difference is noticeable. It's a while since I drove the GTI, but from memory, it doesn't rev out as freely as the Cupra engine. It seems to give up a bit past 5.5k where the Cupra will hit the red line without taking a breath. The Cupra also has the dynamic chassis control as standard, where most GTIs are not specced with it. It's well worth having as it's more comfortable in comfort, and more controlled in sport settings - best of both worlds.

The GTI's positives are mostly on fit and finish. It does feel a more polished item inside the cabin. Not that there is anything wrong with the Cupra, but there are some cheaper, scratchy plastics that are hard to ignore once you find them. Having said that, the SEAT was actually less prone to rattles and squeaks... Make of that what you will.

If I had to choose one as a daily, it'd probably be the GTI... BUT it'd have to have the DCC option ticked.

I can’t speak for the Gti but drive a golf R and a Cupra 300 daily. The VW is marginally nicer inside in my opinion, slightly better materials but not much in it but the Cupra is still a nice place to be. our R doesn’t have DCC where as the Cupra does and it makes a great deal of difference, both in comfort and usability. I’d make that a definite tick on the options list if it were mine. Much more comfortable in comfort mode and tightens up nicely in Cupra mode, a noticeable difference. I’m pretty sure the exhaust is louder on the Cupra than the VW’s as well

Have you test drove anything else because there are some cracking alternatives.

The Mégane RS is a sweet steer.

Never a better opportunity for a shameless plug to my Seat Leon Cupra 290 review on YouTube.

I loved it. When I did the review it was fairly new to me. It really grew on me and imo better than the GTI. I tracked it and took it to the Nurburgring. It also did family stuff really well. Oh and the bucket seats are epic.

This is something I noticed with my Cupra ST as it pulls so strongly right up to the limiter in all of the lower gears, and it feels like it would continue to do so in 6th and 7th if it had a chance on a long bit of runway or empty stretch of autobahn. It's an addictive sensation.

I have to agree with this, the way the Cupra pulls constantly amazes me. That combined with the DSG makes it seem like it could go on forever.
