Mk6 Fiesta ST - opinions/alternatives?

Seeing as my commute has dropped from 80 miles a day to 0, with it looking to be that for another 6 months and with working from home likely to play a big part beyond that, I feel like my £240pm PCP car is being wasted sat on the drive somewhat! Also it feels like a time where it wouldn't hurt to reduce my debt and outgoings as much as possible for peace of mind, plus there are one or two specialist traders offering decent money for my car, so I can possibly come away with some cash in my pocket. Therefore, I'm looking into the possibility of getting a £2-3.5k car to run about in for the next year.
Normally I'd look straight to the various Renault Sport Clio's - I've had several over the years, but it seems they're commanding strong money these days, compared to the bargains I've picked up in the past, so I'm looking slightly further afield. The MK6 Fiesta ST (ideally the facelift) seems to be a good option, I've seen several well looked after, clean examples pop up in this price range, but I'm wondering what the main things I should be looking out for are? Some Googling has turned up some helpful pointers, but always good to get a previous owners/enthusiasts views on them as ownership propositions. The key points on Clios tend to be belts, gearboxes, melting interiors and some other bits, so knowing anything like that for the Fiesta would be helpful.
Also, if anyone has any alternatives I may not have thought of? Ideally I'd be looking for something vaguely Fiesta sized, relatively fun and solid. Also if it can be capable of doing longer journeys without being a complete pain, either comfort wise or wallet wise, that'd be great! I've done my commute in all manner of small hot hatches and my back is in reasonable shape for now, so doesn't need to be Rolls Royce levels of comfort, but some nice seats, air con and minimal chance of it falling apart en route would be helpful.

I know its a little over budget but this may make a lot of sense....

Yes you can buy a Mk1 SSS for less than this however this could 'perhaps' serve the OP longer term (?) - more comfortable, extra gear & toys etc...Plenty of MK1 swift sports for less than 3k as well. Fun but probably not too comfy on longer trips.
