I bought the E63 estate on the basis that it's about as broadly capable a single car as you can get. Then I bought another car (e46 330ci convertible - actually two of them) for something fun, and roof off driving. I'm now wondering if my garage really makes sense, and whether - especially as driving is a smaller part of my life since lockdown, there's a way of extracting some of the money I have tied up in cars without losing the overall capability.

So, I'm wondering if it's possible to get both a comfy distance-cruising ebay-purchase-collecting tip-running large estate, and a fast, fun convertible, each in the £12k range.

The estate just needs to be decently quick and big, so I'm assuming there's a 300-350ish bhp e-class that will fit the bill.

The less obvious to me question is what £12k ish convertible is as fast and fun to drive as an E63, comfortable for a 6'3" 17 stone person, not so old/ high mileage as to be unreliable or high maintenance (I'm sure you could buy all sorts of exotic stuff if you get one that's old and knackered enough) so it's viable for weekends away etc., and on that point would ideally have a decent boot. A couple of suitcases would be perfect but at a minimum a week's clothing or some shopping.

I don't really care about fuel economy or looks, although I do prefer fairly stealthy cars given the choice. Any ideas?

Estate wise here's where I'd be looking:

R36

E500 Avantgarde this would mean going for slightly cheaper convertibles, this would be my pick.

Thanks, that's a great response. That Passat is lovely. Plus I had no idea there was an E class convertible. Now I'm wondering if I've never seen one or if I assumed it was a different model. Maybe if I had two E classes I could negotiate a discount on servicing. Looks like the estate end of the deal is much easier, not sure if any of the convertibles really tick the fast enough box, but that's been really helpful and I know where I need to start. Will have a look for faster versions of these and see what budget that would leave for the estate. Thanks again.

Convertibles not fast enough? beer A proper PH statement smile

Now in reality all of those will see you to 60mph in around 5 seconds & have plenty of punch, now if you don't mind a bit of remapping in the case of the S5/640/335 all will see close to 400bhp with some choice mods.

With the SLK55 an exhaust map & filters will see you with 380bhp along with an epic exhaust note which is where my money would go.

If you want more go from the get go then there's these but they're more maintenance heavy on the flipside they should depreciate a bit less:

Cheers.

I really didn't think there'd be a V8 M3 in the budget. Even the E46 ones are heading north of 12k. I do like a V8.
