Is the FN2 Type R really that bad?
Discussion
Im currently considering what to next and would be thankful for some wisdom!
Im currently getting a little sick of my 1.8 Civic Typs S. (Made a thread on that too!) Its currently being used for rep work duties but hopefully not for much longer - it has actually been very useful for this however i really do not enjoy driving it and i do miss something I actually go out of my way to drive. I usually cant wait to get out of it!!!
The problem is every time I consider what i want next based on what things im after i always come back to the FN2 Type R. A car that gets absolutely slated on here and elsewhere.
I have driven one and must say was a bit confused as to all the bad press it gets but can appreciate why it would over the previous model - worse handling, not much more power.
At one point i was quite set on it but the longer i have the Type S i wonder if having the next car based on something that im currently not liking is not a good idea.
On mine im really not impressed with the overall quality, it feels cheap, rough around the edges and the handling and road holding is pretty bad (it feels as crashy as a shopping trolley) however its firm ride definitely doesnt mean its a good drive which is the most frustrating. The engine though i find actually is quite good and economical for a revvy non turbo.
I actually found the R more compliant and predictable on the road weirdly - despite what everyone says. I hear often they can be improved with some minor modifications but is it much of an improvement?
So my question is to live with day to day was it a good experience or did the downsides outweigh having vtec, a nice gearbox and sharper handling.
Im trying to think of reliable alternatives but sometimes wonder if im better off with something like the 350z, Mx5 or S2000 within the same budget. However i do really like the flexibility with the space of a hatchback...even though i dont carry passengers that often.

I’ve got one and come from a type s 1.8 before that a fiesta st mk7
I really enjoy having my fn2. It depends what your after and how you see the car. I only do 5k miles a year and that is mainly for weekend blasts etc. The vtec for me is the highlight, and without it, it would certainly be lacking. The handling, unless your on a very smooth surface is poor, it’s very skaty on the rear on B roads. The overall ride is firm, and tbh if it was been used as a daily I couldn’t put up with it. Other qualities are
Good however, interior for is nice, looks well for age, price 2k-7k depending on what you want and reliability is top notch .
So to sunmarise, personally I’d say if it’s not your daily and your on a budget id go for it. The fuel isn’t great for performance 28ish mpg.
There was a good few reasons the fn2 worked for me but everyone’s different. Maybe buy a cheap one and see how you get on with it!
If I could I’d love to try a 350z. I’m hoping to upgrade to a 135 early next year but don’t know whether I’ll have any more fun!

I don’t think they’re bad at all.
I had a 1.8 EX and was looking to replace it with a type r gt. Ultimately I just couldn’t find one that had been looked after at the time and got a bit fed up with going to look at ropey examples. I was impressed by how they drove though compared to the 1.8.
In the end I bought an E92 325i which I just happened to see on a local forecourt. The straight 6 sold it to me on test and I bought it there and then. Kept it for 3 years and I’ve no doubt a civic would’ve cost a lot less!
A lot of people seem to prefer turbo rather than vtec. You could maybe try a Focus ST 2.5 and a Megane rs250 to compare. I’m driving a fiesta st3 now and do prefer that to the Honda.

I've driven a couple and like you, really like the idea of one as they're cheap and practical (and I think still look brilliant). I couldn't really find fault with the ones I drove so I assume a lot of the bad press was maybe because it wasn't that huge step up from the EP3. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me about them will be along to point out all their pitfalls but I really like them (I like the EP3 too but it seems semi decent FN2s are now the same/less than semi decent EP3s).
@wizzard450 Interesting path youve taken there with ST etc. Very similar to what ive done...out of interest what made you jump to the 1.8 civic, how do you find yours? Ive tried my best to warm to it and lightly modified it so its nicer to drive but i still struggle to warm to it. It is a boggo harch i guess at the end of the day.
Other than that i have considered the Mk2 Swift Sport . Also ticks a few boxes and it has 5 doors.....but is also slightly down on power from my civic.
With the Type R i could definitely see why people find the ride jaring on long runs. Id probably just end up using it for commutes or just for myself.
I did also have an NC Mx5 in the past and i am wondering if i do actually need a hatch at all...however it is useful when i use a roof rack occasionally but these days its rare. Im wondering if i gave the mx5 a fair chance but thinking back i think its the most memorable car ive owned but id definitely go for the later model where they sorted out the handling a bit better with the better suspension. I had to do quite a bit of fiddling to mine to get it where i was happy with it.

I’m not surprised you have to ask this question, as normally the mere mention of it is enough to send people frothing at the mouth and referring to Clarksons review back in the day.
I had one though and I thought it was a great little car. They still look modern, they have a wonderful engine and gearbox, grippy handling, quite nice interior, very reliable, cheap enough to buy. Not much not to like IMO.
In fact, I prefer it over the EP3, there, I said it. It looks better, is a nicer place to be, is just as fast, actually has some steering feel, engine has been tuned slightly for a better noise.
One mod I did do was to put a Hondata tuning box on it. Well worth it in my opinion, it gives a higher red line, lower VTEC engagement point, which means you can enjoy VTEC more often and the car felt significantly more urgent and sounded better, any reservations about its performance will likely disappear, even though it probably wasn’t much quicker than stock, it just feels quicker.
Stick one of those and get a fast road setup and you will have a very nice fun car for not much money. Even better if you can stretch to an LSD equipped model (the championship white ones had these standard). AVOID the 19” wheels though.

Yes everywhere i look theres so many mixed reviews! I even have a friend who has one and he loves it but I haven’t asked him his real thoughts as he’s biased! ??Absolutely defends it to the death!I had one though and I thought it was a great little car. I ignored the Clarkson review after the then Stig Ben Collins said it was one of the best hot hatches on track.
I have no affiliations to the EP3 so that helps! I actually think the boggo Civic is a good car but is let down by the drab driving dynamics....i love the looks (mine looks like an R) and I really like interior so think the R is the natural progression with better seats, interior, brakes, clutch, steering and ride compliance! Basically what i think it should be!
......I still have that roadster itch though! I think because i know its built for performance from the ground up! Step forward theS2000 ..... it would be a happy bridge inbetween with Vtec and roadster perks but i doubt £5-6k will get me very far with one!

If you can stretch to an S2000 then I would go for that, be a lot more special overall. I saw a minty one the other day when I was hooning, followed it for a bit through a village, still a very nice looking car, and that engine is even more bonkers. The only criticisms I’ve really heard of are somewhat lairy handling at the limit.
Alternatively an NC MX5 given the BBR treatment will be worth a look for similar thrills.

I’ve just bought one. So the below is slightly biased.
For the price, it’s hard to beat the value offered. I’ve also not really experienced anything with a similar driving experience to VTEC save for a DC2 or DC5, which are massively out of budget. I also couldn’t find an EP3 with credible history. I don’t get along with turbos and the number of NA warm and hot hatches is dwindling with emissions regs.
Yes, the suspension is hard. Too hard. But it sounds glorious, has Honda reliability, and a 485 litre boot. What it loses in points to the suspension comfort it gains in practicality. With the rear seats down it’s carvernous and with them up the boot is still huge. Ironically it’s the most practical car I’ve ever owned despite that not being one of my initial wants. It’s also understated. I’m sure the latest one drives great but it’s too “loud” visually for my liking, the FN2 blends in far more.
It’s getting difficult to find them with decent history without being stupidly priced. The tax is also a bit painful. But on the whole I’m massively enjoying the ownership experience so far.
My previous “fun” cars were a mk1 MX5 heavily modified for track, an Impreza, Focus ST and now this. The Civic I rank almost as fun as the MX5 (let’s just hope it doesn’t start rusting!).

I had one and it was great fun despite the reviews, however the build and ride quality got on my nerves once I was using it for 15k+ miles a year so I got rid. Mine handled like s
t when I first got it on budget tyres, lift off oversteer central but once I'd changed the tyres for decent ones it was like a different car.
They are great value atm, I'd consider one as an upgrade from a Type S but I'd stick some eibach springs on it and a Group N or similar map.

I had a 57 plate from new, done around 85,000 miles and it turned out to be a very reliable car. It was completely standard when I sold it in August. Things to look out for when buying:
1. Check the gearbox as there were issues with the 3rd gear synco when changing up fro 2nd. I don’t think this was ever a recall therefore there are cars on the market with this issue.
2. Water leaks are in issue front and rear.
3. Rust on the rear torsion beam.
4. Service history, check that the valve clearances have been done.
5. Try a buy a standard unmodified car.
6. The later cars, 59 plate I think have an LSD as standard.
Good luck with search.
Drop me a line if require any further information.

I much prefer the fn2 to the mk7 st. It’s not as fast, but better build quality, price and vtec make up for it.
The thing I like about the fn2 is it has character. The vtec makes you want to kick its head in all the time, and it’s so rewarding stringing some nice bends together in vtec.
I picked mine up for 2.6k, bit rough round edges, 115k, no service history, It’s had 2k miles of hard use and been spot on. 2 rear shocks and some new tyres and she’s sweet. Tbh I maybe overpaid, there is some very cheap cars out there. Head over to the fn2 group on Facebook, usually some nice examples for sale but also dirt cheap depending on what your after! Really good bunch too.
Is the FN2 bad, nope. I've had 2 of them. I get sick of folks banging on about how the EP3 is better. IMO its not, after driving a few of these bread vans, give me the FN2 any day.
Its true Honda did forget to fit suspension in any way, shape or form, but if you can live with that all you really need is to drop a bit cash on a fast road setup, rev it within an inch of its life once warmed up and it'll just go, and go, and go. All it wants is oil and petrol.
My last FN2 went in trade for a mk7 fiesta ST, then I went from that to a mk3 focus ST. Both fords are quicker than the old FN2 but I still miss it. Lovely car for the money.

I bought an FN2 in Jan, had a Martellius exhaust and was on the optional 19" rage alloys. Ran it alongside a Seat Leon Cupra 300 for a few months until I sold it. My thoughts:
- Ride was shocking. The 18"s are better and general consensus is that fitting lowering springs improves ride quality a lot.
- Felt very cheap and tinny, rattles all over the place.
- Never got bored of hitting VTEC but it was tiring on motorway commutes when overtaking. You have to thrash it to get anywhere and gearing was too short imo.
- Felt much more involving than my Leon and I'd chose the Civic 99% of the time for weekend drives.
I've had a 350z before and would choose that over an FN2 - not as light and direct but much better to live with as a daily IMO.

Interesting as I used to have a MK7 ST. I agree I find the Civics build quality as better - mainly on the body panels.....however I do still find this shape lacking compared to Hondas usual build quality. I did look up the Mk7 again recently to see if it was worth another look in but I don't think I miss that Fiesta dash and switchgear and they are literally everywhere now. I think with normal driving it feels quicker though. I do think there's similarities with the FN and ST though with the way they drive yet the ST gets so much more praise.
I was actually a little underwhelmed with Mk7 but I think mine was built on a Friday and I ended up using it all the time so I think it lost a little sparkle. I don't think the Type R would get the same amount of use.
I have debated stretching budget when the time comes to the DC5 or S2000 (same for 350zs) as they are more dedicated cars however at around £6k I will be getting the bottom of the barrel examples as opposed to cleaner FN2s.
So the general consensus is that they are good with cars superb engine but not ideal for longer regular trips and may need to be careful with tyre/alloy and geo to get full potential out of them....

I bought an FN2 Type R at auction, totally standard. The paintwork on the bonnet had more chips than McDonald's but everything else was mint. It was a great car, did plenty of track days in it. Even and Destination Nurburgring event. it was faultless. The ride was very hard but the seats were comfy. As some have mentioned before the comedy sized boot was van like in capacity. Only sold it for a rear-wheel-drive car. Should have kept it as it was very predictable in handling, (understeer under load) but sold it for nearly what we paid for it so it was cheap motoring.
My votes a yes if you can get an unmolested car, well put together and the interior has aged very well. exterior not so much but still not offensive looking.
Cheers

Had mine nearly 5 years now, great fun when your in the mood, the engine and gearbox combo is perfect, very practical with that boot, reliable and they are still 'fast' once you get to know how to get the most from them.
The 2 main negatives for me are the hard ride and the gear ratios make motorway driving less relaxing. I might put different springs on as from what I have read that is a cheap solution to curing the issue, with the motorway you either slow down or turn the radio up...

Wow quite a fair bit of praise unexpectedly- not the hatred filled machine that many make out to be then. Wonder if there is also snobbery at play with reviews with it being compared to older more exotic stuff. EP3 im sure is great but to me its like sitting in a box and around my parts it has a bad image problem, and more dedicated machinery wearing the R badge demands a much higher premium.
Thanks for all the info and ill be sure to have a proper drive in one when im ready. im stuck with mine until i no longer need it for work and i think trying one when ready is a safer bet! Really just after something after something nicer to drive thats more involving.
Ill also try the CRZ and Swift Sport when the time comes as theyre also now on my radar but i think Ill always end up back to the R.
Also got a good idea on what to look out for now through here...so basically syncros, rust, geo, good tyres and solid service history (especially oil changes!) Hear quite a lot that mileage isnt an issue on these.
