I am a 20 year old, who has held my license for coming up 2 years and I have 1 years NCB. I have 3 points on my license which certainly isn't helping matters. I currently have a Vectra 1.8 SRI that's to all intents and purposes fked. I have up to £1500 to spend on a new car, and I am looking to buy something that's a bit more punchy but isn't going to murder me on insurance. Any help would be great

buy something lighter.

buy an mx5 like all 20yos and it'll be fun.

can find some mk2/2.5s for that money.

Concentrate on improving your driving skills, not picking up any more penalty points & building up your no claim bonus. Performance can come later.

It will however be made of rust and need the same again spending on sills!

I do agree though that lighter rather than more powerful will get you a better, more insurable, drive.

to be fair anything at £1500 has a high risk of major rusting..

I did buy my near stock mk1 1.8 for £1800 end of 2018 with no rust on it, original sills etc so it is doable.

had a lot of fun with that car and learned a lot too.

I don't think my driving skill comes into question in this instance but I do agree without penalty points finding a new car would be a lot easier

Driving skill is inextricably linked to observation, which is clearly something you can work on as you have 3 points.

No use getting something fast at your age given the prohibitive insurance costs so it would be best to focus on low weight and fun. A warm hatch or MX5 as suggested would be a great shout that shouldn't break the bank.
