What would you commute 100 miles a day in

Another what car thread of course. I own a Saab 9-3 petrol and noobed. While I can’t fault the car, it’s optimal for cruising up and down the motorway, has all the power I need but it’s not that economical. It does around 35 mpg ( calculated). I will now for the foreseeable future commute 110 miles a day for work. I made the calculations and I could save roughly 100 litres of fuel per month if I went for the devils fuel. I only have to work ; days a week now and that would be 440 miles a week just for work and the Saab can’t do that on a full tank. My budged is almost zero as always but let’s make it 1500 tops. Obvious answer would be a Volvo S60 I know and I even found one in Birmingham for cheap, almost too cheap. I guess an old VAG 1.9 would be the obvious choice but soon Birmingham is going to be ULEZ so that’s out the window. It’s a stop gap car until I get my artic licence so roughly 3-4 months. Should I just keep the Saab, a car I know and trust or buy something that will throw up a large bill (ie Volvo). I know the cheapest option is always the car you have but I need to save on fuel
What would you guys do?

I did a 100 mile each way daily commute for 1.5 years in a 2009 Toyota avensis 2.0D.
I advise you to do your commute in something else. I hated that car.

Just for the next 3-4 months?!....keep the Saab 100%.

Yes. The Saab also has the most important thing for a long commute IMO, very comfortable seats.

Even if you need to spend some money on it, it'll still be the cheaper option.

I’ll run it to the ground then . The problem with my cars in general is that they never die. Had a Mark 1 Focus bulletproof but wanted more fun so got myself a Celica, then I needed more space and turbo petrol on the cheap side of things and got a Saab. Only issue I ever had is it popped the pipe from the intercooler to the throttle body mid overtaking. I also have an ABS fault for like forever now and every time I fix the wiring it keeps coming back. Changed the sensor (hub) also and rewired the whole thing from the loom and it only lasted like 3 months. No abs means no cruise control either. Could it be the module? Tech 2 said it’s the front right abs sensor as always.

I used to do it in a 56 plate Astra with 250,000 miles on the clock. Thankfully I didn't pay for the car or fuel with my own money.

for 440 miles per week, assuming the diesel will get you 50mpg vs 35mpg, taking into account the higher cost of diesel (1.137 vs petrol 1.097) you will save £17pw/£66 pm or £266 over the 4 month period.

Based on the short timeframe of 3-4 months i wouldn't say its worth it (keep the saab), a longer period and i would consider it.

Thanks! I forgot about the higher fuel price to be honest. Looks like the Saab will stay with me for a little longer. Seems weird that it’s ULEZ exempt but it’s euro 3 .
