Options for replacement Family Car up to 40K.

Hello all.

I've been leasing our main family car for a number of years. Due to the lack of deals and getting a bit tired of looking for a replacement every couple of years I'm considering options for something to buy. Current car is a Volvo V90 T5 Cross Country, previous to that was an XF. I like everything about the Volvo, the economy isn't great but acceptable.

Most of our journeys are local and <20 miles (school run, commute to work etc short round trips). However my wife's family live a 6 hour drive away in North West Scotland, which is a trip we'll do 2-4 times per year so something that's comfortable with decent loading capability is required. Our youngest is approaching 18 months old so will still need a pram/buggy for a little while yet. My daughter has plenty of space behind me in the Volvo. At 6'4" I tend to need the seat right back to be comfortable.

Given our trip profile, I've been looking at plug in hybrids. On the face of it, it makes sense as we could do the school run etc on pure electric then run in hybrid mode for longer journeys, which being a fan of the Volvo comfort and tech had me looking at the Volvo XC90 T8. However while I think it would be cracking for the longer trips etc, it's a big old lump to manoeuvre for the bulk of what it will get used for, plus comparing to the non-hybrid you're paying a decent premium which you may or may not pay not pay back over the ownership of the car.

What else should I consider? 5 Series estate? Issues with short journeys in a diesel-is that still a thing?

I could go smaller and just rent a car when required for those longer journeys-or get a roof box.

Passat GTE estate would tick a few of your boxes and you’d have cash left over.

Superb iV Estate would do the same with even more room.

Or for more pace with space, and still 40mpg+ on a run, Superb 4x4 272 Sportline Estate.

Agree Superb estate would fit the bill, or. Kodiaq which is a bit like a Superb estate stretched upwards...

I've had 2 latest Gen Skoda VRs, so no issues going back to Skoda other than the quality of the cabin is perhaps a step down from the Volvo and other premium marques?

Things like adaptive cruise and lane assist are things I'd never had until the volvo but wouldn't want to be without now.

Too small boot is tiny compared to the VRs. Almost defiantly looking at Superb, A6 etc size

Just gone from v90 cc (d5) to a Mercedes E400d estate in the last week.
Absolutely loved the Volvo other than a tad dull to drive.
Initial impressions - the Merc beats it on virtually every level, including (surprisingly) comfort and economy.
The biggest difference is as a drivers car - so very happy so far.
235 - 340 bhp = icing on the cake, especially as no detriment to mpg.
Would definitely recommend worth looking at.

Stinger is a hatch with through loading and folding down rear seats. Really decent space.

Properly quick too with every possible toy and driver assistance.

Make sure you go post March 2019 as there are significant upgrades from then onwards.


Note, the latest Superb will have all the mod cons you need too - adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, virtual cockpit etc etc.

V90 T8 Hybrid would fit the bill and be slightly smaller than the XC90?

2016 Mercedes S500e is well within your budget and at least has a nice 6 cylinder engine (the 4 cylinder in the Volvo XC90 T8 is not the nicest for a luxury vehicle)

Supreme comfort given your height and those long journeys you make will be complete bliss.
