My sons Corsa has sadly gone to heaven. He’s got £2k cash and thinking of a bit of finance so wondered if anyone has any recommendations for new car deals which would work with his age and deposit. Cheapest monthlies as possible as insurance probably £2k/yr. He’s in full time employment but no credit history apart from mobile phone contact. Cheers

Lend him a little extra (make him pay it back) & he can get something like this build up some more no claims then he can finance a properly smart set of wheels with 4-5 years no claims as well as a decent APR.

In the meantime he can get something like this with his cash:

Borrow £2k from Dad and buy the best Japanese petrol car he can find. A Yaris or a Cvic perhaps.

Dacia Sandero. Cheapest “new” car on the market, the new model looks very smart.

Cheers for replies. I tried to convince him he needed a KIA Picanto - £10200 brand new OTR and he could use his current car as a deposit (£2000 gov. scrappage scheme). If he adds a further £2000 deposit (which he has) the Picanto comes in at £70/month. Bargain I thought..

He's got a few (girl) friends who own Picanto's <edit>

His preferred choice would be a KIA Ceed. I agree - looks quite good for the money. And a bit more masculine. Sample prices are £13000 for a 69 plate with 5000 miles. Finance offer is 4.9% and £500 deposit contribution. So basically £145/month (£2k deposit). 7year warranty. 12 months roadside assistance.

We've looked at older cars and it's just a lottery. He could spend £2k and it could be solid and last 2yrs. He could spend £2k and it blows up next week. He's fully employed, lives at home, and can afford it. Kids don't look after cars like we do, so IMO and with finance being so cheap nowadays it's a no brainer to buy something with a proper guarantee.

Mod edit to remove homophobic comment.

Crazy idea this, why not just buy a £2-3k car.... at 19 when presumably he living at home an has minimal outgoings would you want to get tied up to having finance on "the cheapest new car" which in the case of a Dacia Is just tragic. Surely now is the best time to be jumping into a used car bargain and waving 2 fingers at all his mates with 1.0 Fiestas whilst building some NCB and putting money towards the next step up rather than constantly paying £Xpm

A VERY quick browse on PH classifieds and £2-3k can have you in

- Audi TT
- Mazda RX8
- BMW 1/3 series
- MX5
- MR2
- Mini Cooper S
- Fiesta ST
- Ibiza FR
- Toyota Celica
- Civic Type R
- Suzuki Swift Sport / Ignis Sport
- Clio 1*2 /197

All of these would be great fun for a year or 2 and in less you are seriously unlucky or buy the worst one in the country none of those cars will cost £200pm in maintenance!

If your looking at Kia then how about the Rio? It sits in-between the Pics to and Ceed and the GT line models look quite smart.

I'm surprised it took too long - £2000 is easily enough to buy any number of interesting/cheap/good value/reliable or otherwise cars!?

And then if he puts jus £200 a month away for a year, he can get a 4 or 5 grand car next year? And the next year...

I would agree that buying a cheap car is what most of us would do in that position and does make sense. But he's been driving an old Corsa which has eventually let him down and he wants a nice new car. If he can afford it then there's nothing wrong with that.

There is of course another alternative. Buy something just a few years old for say £5-7k. It'd be a nice motor and the small amount of finance would be offset by potentially low running costs.

But if it has to be a new car then go for it, plenty of folk do.

He got that answer on his first reply, now OP if you really want a new car then take a look at the Kia Rio 1.0T GT Line:

His mates who’ve got the ubiquitous vw/fiesta/corsa stuff on finance can’t believe it.

None of which would be particularly reliable, nor would I imagine fun for a 19 year old to insure eek

The Up! is quite well spec'd and, being VW, commands a certain amount of respectability I'd have thought. Decent residuals and I'd expect good insurance category

That is not fun for age of OP to insure.

I have to agree, the number of youngsters driving around in new cars is unbelievable. Ive never had a new car in my life and im 47!

The willingness of people to tie themselves up in debt/finance packages at such a young age is bewildering to me.

You can get so much car for £2k cash these days.

This was the case 20 years ago though too.
I guess when I was young I had to make do with some extremely cheap & crap cars

Bloody ridiculous. I didn’t spend anything like £2K on a car until I was in a decent job in the City. Certainly didn’t strap myself up to do so either. Perfectly encapsulates why we are so screwed. Buy something petrol and Japanese with no debt.

I’ve no idea what you’re talking about. Real world insurance price for a 17 year old as the main policy holder was £848 for 8k miles on a C30 1.6 petrol with Admiral black box.
